College Football Picks and Predictions

Oklahoma -5.5 (-110)

Oklahoma at Michigan, 12:00 p.m. ET

I'm laying the points with the Oklahoma Sooners in this rematch of last season's meeting.

Oklahoma enters with significantly more impressive quarterback production. John Mateer threw for 225 yards in the opener, while Lloyd Avant led the Sooners with 79 rushing yards and Isaiah Sategna III had 76 receiving yards.

The Michigan Wolverines, meanwhile, barely escaped Western Michigan in Week 1, winning 13-12. That is a particularly concerning result heading into a matchup with an Oklahoma team that won its opener and is now being asked to win by less than a touchdown.

The other factor I like is Oklahoma's offensive versatility. Mateer's ability to contribute through the air and on the ground while the Sooners establish their running game gives them multiple ways to attack a Michigan defense that will be under substantially more pressure than it was against Western Michigan.

Texas A&M -14.5 (-106)

Arizona State at Texas A&M, 12:00 p.m. ET

The Texas A&M Aggies are another favorite I'm comfortable laying points with.

The Aggies opened the season with a 50-0 demolition of Missouri State. Marcel Reed completed 21 of 30 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns, while Rueben Owens rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

The Arizona State Sun Devils also dominated their opener, but this is a completely different level of competition. The Sun Devils beat Morgan State 70-0, with quarterback Cutter Boley throwing for 387 yards and six touchdowns.

The reason I’m comfortable with this spread is Texas A&M's defensive upside. The Aggies held Missouri State to only 67 total yards in the opener, and their pass rush should present a much more difficult challenge for Boley than what he saw in Week 1.

Arizona State certainly has enough offensive talent to make this interesting, but Kyle Field, the Aggies’ D and Reed make this a spot where I am backing A&M.

Oregon First Half -12.5 (-112)

Oregon at Oklahoma State, 12:00 p.m. ET

I like the Oregon Ducks to come out firing in Stillwater, making the Ducks an appealing first-half spread bet against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Oregon a slow a startin last week's 34-27 win over Boise State. The Ducks were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 17-14 at halftime despite ultimately outgaining the Broncos 497-274. Dante Moore eventually settled in and finished with 378 passing yards and three touchdowns, but Oregon needed most of the afternoon to put Boise State away.

I'd expect Ducks coach Dan Lanning to emphasize a much sharper start this week. Oregon may have a little extra motivation to make an early statement after last week's sluggish opening half, and Oklahoma State looks vulnerable after losing 24-10 to Tulsa in its opener. The Cowboys turned the ball over four times in that defeat and managed only 10 points despite running 86 offensive plays.

The full-game spread has climbed to -22.5, so taking this first-half spread is my preferred way to back the Ducks. If Oregon cleans up the mistakes that plagued it early against Boise State, it has the offensive firepower to create separation well before halftime.
