Celtics vs. 76ers Game 5 Analysis

After the two squads split a pair of games in Philadelphia, the series returns to Boston with the Celtics back in possession of homecourt advantage.

The Celtics had a chance to take a commanding lead with a victory in Game 4 but failed to do so. Boston had a chance to win the game on the final possessions of both regulation and overtime and came up empty on each. Between their collapse in Game 1 and their late-game issues in Game 4, the Celtics will head into Game 5 feeling like they should be up at least 3-1.

Despite the loss, there were some positives for the Celtics in Game 4. They overcame a 16-point deficit to take a 5-point lead into the final two minutes before ultimately failing to close out the game. For Philadelphia, that 16-point lead was their largest of the series, and even though they let the Celtics back into the game, the Sixers were once again the better team come clutch time.

In Game 4, James Harden broke out of his two-game slump to produce a 42-point masterclass. The consistent thread in the 76ers' wins this series has been Harden's production.

In their wins, he is averaging 43.5 points while shooting 62.2% from the field and 56.5% from behind the arc, adding 4.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists. In their losses, he is averaging 14.0 points while shooting 17.8% from the field and 15.3% from behind the arc, adding 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Which version of Harden shows up in Game 5 will go a long way toward determining who wins this series.

From Boston's perspective, their losses, which required historically great games from Harden, were both close affairs that were winnable. On the flip side, the Celtics' victories were a blowout win in Game 2 and a relatively stress-free W in Game 3 in which they took the lead in the second quarter and never gave it back.

In the Conference Semifinals, Boston leads all teams in points per game (116.3) and three-point field goal percentage (38.0%), and they rank second in field goal percentage (48.8%), three-pointers made per game (15.8) and assists per game (25.5). The 76ers rank second-worst in points per game (106.0), second-best in three-point field goal percentage (37.4%), fifth-best in field goal percentage (44.2%), third-best in three-pointers made per game (13.0) and last in assists per game (17.5).

Heading into Game 5, Boston remains the favorite to win the series (-310), the Eastern Conference (-175), and the NBA Finals (+165). The Celtics have struggled in advantageous positions before, most recently in Game 1, and their ability to remain focused and avoid the lapses that have plagued them in the past will determine if they grasp the opportunity in front of them or if they let it slip.
