White Sox at Guardians — NRFI

Sean Newcomb gets the start for the Chicago White Sox against Gavin Williams for the Cleveland Guardians, with Newcomb throwing left-handed and Williams right-handed. Newcomb owns a 2.77 ERA over 84.1 innings this season, while Williams has a 3.78 ERA with 228 strikeouts across 169 innings. Cleveland has gone five straight home games without scoring in the first inning, while Chicago has gone 4-1 to the NRFI in its last five games by that measure. That combination makes this one of my favorite first-inning unders on the slate.

Tigers at Blue Jays — NRFI

Troy Melton and José Soriano give us a pair of right-handers in what has quietly been one of the better NRFI environments on the board. The Toronto Blue Jays own a 75.8% overall NRFI rate and a 77.4% mark at night, while Detroit has posted a 74.3% NRFI rate at home. Jose Soriano has posted a 12.2% K-BB% this season and a 53.0% ground-ball rate, giving him a good foundation for avoiding early damage. Melton has regressed some lately but still owns an 11.3% swinging-strike rate and 2.42 ERA on the year for the Detroit Tigers.

Yankees at Twins — NRFI

Will Warren starts for the New York Yankees against Dean Kremer for the Minnesota Twins. Warren has a 4.05 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 142.1 innings this season, and he comes in off a six-inning, one-run outing against Colorado on September 9 in which he struck out eight. Kremer has a 5.65 ERA in 71.2 innings, which isn’t ideal, but his SIERA is a much more serviceable 4.14 while he’s got a 23.0% K rate. Both pitchers have good enough stuff to thrive in the first frame.
