The top teams in the NHL are taking over in January, and it'll be quite the race to the end to see who walks out of the month most dominant.
January is often a good month for the top teams to finally set themselves apart from the rest of the pack -- as we've seen this year. With five teams dominating throughout, it's coming down to the wire to see who finishes with the most points in 2024's first months.
Let's dive into the odds for most points among NHL teams in January, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Vancouver Canucks | -120 |
Edmonton Oilers | +350 |
Boston Bruins | +500 |
Detroit Red Wings | +650 |

NHL Most Points in January Odds
Vancouver Canucks (-120)
The Vancouver Canucks have reclaimed their dominance that we saw in the first month of the season, putting together a 8-1-1 record in the month of January -- good for a league-leading 17 points thus far.
Over these last 10 games, Vancouver is averaging 3.95 goals per 60 minutes while just letting up just 2.47 goals per 60 minutes. This is, unsurprisingly, the best combination of marks for any team in the league this month -- giving them the edge to finish this month just as strong.
Not only do they have one point over everyone else, but they'll also have three straight matchups against bottom-tier teams. Tonight, they'll take on the 14-30-2 Chicago Blackhawks. Their final two games of the month will be against the St. Louis Blues and Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blues are 22-20-2, and the Blue Jackets are a rough 14-22-9.
The Canucks have the inside track to keep the most points as they do now, which the -120 odds reflect. Unless they suffer two surprising losses, they should end January on top.
Edmonton Oilers (+350)
There's no hotter team in the NHL than the Edmonton Oilers.
Edmonton has won 13-straight games, including an 8-0-0 record in the month of January. They've been completely dominant over their last 10 games, allowing just 1.58 goals per 60 (second-best) while recording 3.45 goals per 60. After such a poor start to the campaign, the Oilers are back on track, and it's hard to think they'll be slowing down with their upcoming matchups.
The Oilers are very similar to the Canucks. They'll too play the Blue Jackets and Blackhawks in their next two outings before finishing up the month of January ahead of the All-Star Break with a game against the 25-20-1 Nashville Predators at home.
If Edmonton can remain the most dominant team in hockey as they've been all month, they're the team to bet on with the hopes that the Canucks can drop a game (or two) against inferior opponents.
Boston Bruins (+500)
It hasn't been a perfect month for the Boston Bruins, but when you record points in 9 of 10 games, something is going right.
In the month of January, the Bruins are 6-1-3 with 15 points -- two back of the Canucks for the month's lead. The reason the Bruins have such a good shot is that they have four more games to play this month while the Oilers and Canucks have just three. They're still in catchup mode and need a win to be even with Vancouver.
They're scoring goals at an elite rate right now, ranking second in the NHL with 4.32 goals per 60 minutes in January. The Bruins are also holding opponents to just 2.75 goals per 60, ranking 12th in the league over the last 10 games.
However the Bruins have a tough schedule ahead. Boston will be facing one of the best teams in hockey, the Winnipeg Jets, on Monday. Then they'll take on the Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, and Philadelphia Flyers.
Three of these four teams are playoff teams if the season ended now while the Senators are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. It's not going to be an easy for the Bruins, and considering their tough luck with overtime this month alone, they'll need to really finish strong.
Detroit Red Wings (+650)
After signing Patrick Kane at the start of the season, the Detroit Red Wings are beginning to look like a real threat.
Their first few months were a bit up and down, but the Wings have finally started to put things together. January has seen the Red Wings put together a 7-1-1 record, good enough to push them to 24-17-5 overall and currently hold the East's top wild card spot. The Detroit has posted 3.16 goals per 60 minutes over their last 10 while letting up 2.77. They've made things happen in that small margin.
Though, with those averages, it's hard to see them overcome the Canucks, Oilers, or Jets for that matter when sitting with just 15 points. Detroit also has three tough matchups over their next few games with the Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, and Vegas Golden Knights ahead. They may be going well, but beating all three of them sounds more like wishful thinking.
The Ottawa Senators will also be facing them to close out the month, so that could be a "W" to count on.
Winnipeg Jets (+1100)
The final team of consideration are the Winnipeg Jets, who very well may be the best team in the NHL right now.
Winnipeg is currently 30-10-4 with 64 overall points. This month, they've kept up their season-long dominance with an 8-1-0 record -- good enough for 16 points and 1 shy of Vancouver. They're scoring plenty over the last 10 games (3.08 goals per 60) and have been the best team at keeping the puck out of the net, coming into today with a stunningly low 1.39 goals against per 60 minutes, which leads the league in that span.
The reason their odds are so high is that they will face the Boston Bruins followed by consecutive games facing the Toronto Maple Leafs. Those are the toughest matchups that any of these five teams face with little leeway for an easy game in any of them.
If you're looking for a longshot, what we can say is that the Jets have dominated this year. Despite the tough task ahead, it shouldn't be a shock to see them end the month with wins in each tilt.
