NHL Betting Picks for Wednesday 1/10/24: Stars Look to Dominate Wild Again

There are just three games on Wednesday as the NHL schedule continues to follow a hot-and-cold pattern. Which games can we find value on tonight?

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Montreal Canadiens at Philadelphia Flyers

Under 6.5 Goals (-128)

The Philadelphia Flyers are looking like a team we can bet the under on this season, especially if the totals are going to stay at 6.5.

We saw the Flyers go under on Monday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. That was the eighth time in their last 11 games that there were fewer than 6.5 goals in the game.

Philly has embraced a defensive style this season. They are seventh in expected goals (xG) allowed per 60 minutes in the NHL and seventh in actual goals against per game.

Even though they will be going with Samuel Ersson in net, he's been nearly as good as Carter Hart. He's saving .137 goals above expected per 60 minutes, compared to .153 for Hart.

The Flyers are not a dynamic offensive team. They are only 25th in goals per game and 19th in xG per 60 minutes. They'll get a matchup tonight against the Montreal Canadiensthat should suit them.

Montreal has struggled great offensively this season. They average the sixth-fewest shot attempts per 60, the eighth-fewest expected goals per 60, and seventh-fewest scoring chances per 60. This all adds up to the Habs scoring the fifth-fewest goals per game.

Philly should be able to limit the Canadiens tonight and likely won't be scoring a ton themselves. That's why we'll play the under in this game.

The model on numberFire also leans with the under, rating this as a one-star bet tonight.

Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars

Stars -1.5 (+128)

We have a rematch of Monday's game but with the location changed.

The Dallas Stars handily beat the Minnesota Wild 4-0 in that game two days ago. They controlled 63.29% of the xG at five-on-five.

Minnesota is still without their best offensive player in Kirill Kaprizov. Their two best defensive defensemen in Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin are also still missing. To add to that, with Filip Gustavsson injured, they will turn to Jesper Wallstedt in net for his first career NHL start.

The Stars are better than the Wild in nearly every aspect of hockey. They control 53.37% of the xG compared to 50.54% for Minnesota. They are third with 3.59 goals per game and allow fewer goals per game than the Wild, as well. Most of these numbers are with the Wild having close to their strongest team on the ice, which they will have tonight.

I like laying -1.5 goals with Dallas in this game. If they are truly one of the NHL's best teams, they shouldn't have much of a problem winning by multiple goals against a depleted Minnesota team.
