NFL Picks and Predictions for Week 4
Bills -6.5 (-122)
Patriots vs. Bills (1 p.m. ET)
Spread
The Buffalo Bills have opened the season 3-0, and I'm willing to back them at this number at home against the New England Patriots.
The gap between these offenses has been substantial through three weeks. Buffalo is averaging an NFL-best 33.7 points per game, compared to only 12.0 for New England. The Bills are also averaging 417.0 total yards per game while the Patriots sit at 319.7.
Josh Allen has once again been the driving force for Buffalo. He's completed 65.1% of his passes for 786 yards and 5 touchdowns while adding 114 rushing yards and a whopping 6 rushing scores. James Cook has been just as impressive on the ground, piling up 346 yards on 58 carries -- an average of 6.0 yards per rush.
New England’s offense hasn't demonstrated much explosiveness. The Patriots are coming off a 35-6 loss to Jacksonville and have scored only 36 points through three games.
New England's defense has played reasonably well overall, but keeping Allen and this Buffalo offense under control for four quarters is a much different challenge. That means the Pats’ offense will need to pick it up to keep pace with Allen, and I’m not sure how much offense they can generate right now.
Give me Buffalo.
Rams -3.0 (-115)
Rams vs. Eagles (1 p.m. ET)
Spread
The Philadelphia Eagles are 2-1, but the underlying offensive numbers leave plenty of room for concern heading into its matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.
The Eagles are averaging only 18.3 points and 302.4 total yards per game. Their passing attack has been particularly quiet, averaging 191.7 yards per contest, while Jalen Hurts has thrown for 620 yards through three games.
Los Angeles has been much better moving the football despite its 1-2 record. The Rams are averaging 284.0 passing yards and 133.7 rushing yards per game, giving them one of the more productive overall offenses in football. Matthew Stafford has thrown for 872 yards and 6 touchdowns while Davante Adams has already accumulated 358 receiving yards.
Plus, there’s a chance Puka Nacua is back Sunday.
The Rams' defense has also been solid. Los Angeles has surrendered only 275.3 total yards per game, including 171.3 through the air. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is coming off a 27-7 loss to Chicago in a game in which Case Keenum carved them up.
Playing at Philadelphia is never an easy assignment, especially for a West Coast team in a 1 p.m. start. But I think the Rams are meaningfully better than the Eagles and am willing to back LA at this -3.0 number.
Texans Moneyline (-154)
Cowboys vs. Texans (1 p.m. ET)
Moneyline
An 0-3 record isn't exactly an appealing starting point for backing the Houston Texans, but this looks like a spot where the Texans can finally break through.
The Dallas Cowboys have been able to move the ball through the air, but their defense has been a major issue. The Cowboys rank near the bottom of the league in total defense and have surrendered 30-plus points in each of their last two games. Dallas enters Sunday allowing roughly 30 points per game while ranking near the bottom of the NFL in yards allowed.
That could be just what Houston needs to wake up offensively. C.J. Stroud has thrown for 794 yards through three games without an interception, but the Texans haven't consistently turned those yards into points. Their biggest weakness has been the rushing attack, which is producing only 84.7 yards per game.
There's also a chance Houston gets healthier for this matchup. Nico Collins and guard Ed Ingram have both been working toward returns after missing the previous two games. Collins caught 7 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, so getting him back would give Stroud a significant boost against a vulnerable Dallas defense.
Houston's defense offers another reason to believe a turnaround is coming. The Texans have accumulated 10 sacks through three games, with Will Anderson Jr. accounting for four of them. That pass rush could help Houston dictate the game against a Dallas offense that has been forced to lean heavily on Dak Prescott and the passing attack.
Despite the Texans' winless record, I think their elite defense and the matchup against Dallas' struggling D make Houston a good cover bet this week.
NFL Betting FAQ
How does the point spread work in NFL betting?
The point spread gives the underdog a specified number of points and subtracts that same number from the favorite. For example, if a team is favored by 3.5 points, it must win by at least 4 points for a bet on that team to cash. A bet on the 3.5-point underdog would win if that team wins outright or loses by 3 points or fewer.
What is an NFL moneyline bet?
A moneyline bet is a wager on which team will win the game outright. The point spread does not matter. Favorites typically have negative moneyline odds, while underdogs usually have positive odds.
What is an over/under in NFL betting?
An over/under, also known as a game total, is a wager on the combined number of points scored by both teams. If the total is set at 47.5, an over bet wins if the teams combine for at least 48 points, while an under bet cashes if they score 47 points or fewer.
What are NFL player prop bets?
NFL player props are wagers based on an individual player's performance rather than the final result of the game. Common markets include passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions, passing touchdowns, and anytime touchdown scorers.
