NBA Predictions for Today: Picks and Best Bets
Nets-Celtics Over 222.5 (-114)
Nets at Celtics — 7:30 p.m. ET
Total Points
The Brooklyn Nets have had serious issues getting stops to begin the season, and that makes the over appealing against the Boston Celtics.
Brooklyn has surrendered at least 121 points in each of its first three games. The Nets most recently gave up 136 points to Indiana, allowing the Pacers to shoot 57.6% from the field and knock down 21 three-pointers.
That should be music to Boston's ears after what we saw from the Celtics last night. Boston erupted for 134 points in a blowout victory over Chicago, including 28 points off the bench from Payton Pritchard. The Celtics have now scored at least 121 points in consecutive games after being held to 103 in their opener.
The question is whether Brooklyn can contribute enough offensively to get us over 221.5.
I think they can. The Nets have scored at least 109 points in all three games and put up 121 against Cleveland. Julius Randle has provided some stability on the offensive end, averaging 22.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists through his first three appearances.
Pistons-Knicks Under 219.5 (-110)
Pistons at Knicks — 8:00 p.m. ET
Total Points
The Detroit Pistons have gotten off to a 3-0 start, but their defense has been just as important as their offense.
Detroit held Philadelphia to only 93 points on Sunday and has allowed 105.6 points per 100 possessions through three games. That's a difficult matchup for a New York Knicks offense that has been one of the NBA's worst to begin the season.
New York enters tonight 0-3 while producing just 102.2 points per 100 possessions. The Knicks have yet to score more than 103 points in a game, and their perimeter shooting has been a major problem. They're hitting only 32.4% of their three-point attempts.
There's some obvious positive-regression potential there, but the total still looks a little high considering New York's offensive issues.
Detroit's 42.0% three-point shooting is also unlikely to remain at that level over the long haul. If the Pistons cool off from deep while their defense continues to give New York problems, the table could be set for an under.
The absence of Jalen Duren creates some concern for Detroit defensively, but the overall setup still has me leaning toward a lower-scoring game.
Kings +18.5 (-110)
Kings at Spurs — 8:00 p.m. ET
Spread
This number is large enough for me to side with the Sacramento Kings.
Sacramento's 0-3 start explains why the market has so little faith in the Kings. They've dropped games to Portland, Memphis, and Utah, and their defense has given opponents plenty of opportunities.
The San Antonio Spurs are also capable of turning a favorable matchup into a blowout, particularly with Victor Wembanyama anchoring the defense.
Still, this is a massive spread for a San Antonio team that enters tonight just 1-2 and hasn’t looked right so far as it experiments with a new starting five. The Spurs' lone victory was a 122-106 win over Dallas when the Mavs were without Cooper Flagg, meaning they haven't won a game by more than 16 points this season.
Sacramento doesn't necessarily need to play particularly well for this bet to hit. The Kings merely need to remain somewhat competitive, and a spread this large provides plenty of room for a late backdoor cover if San Antonio establishes a comfortable lead and takes its foot off the gas.

NBA Betting -- Frequently Asked Questions
What does the point spread mean in NBA betting?
The point spread is a margin set by oddsmakers to level the playing field between two unevenly matched teams. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are listed at -7.5, they need to win by 8 or more points for a bet on them to cash. Conversely, a bet on their opponent at +7.5 wins if that team loses by 7 or fewer points — or wins outright.
What is the moneyline?
The moneyline is a straight-up bet on which team wins the game, with no spread involved. Favorites carry a negative number (e.g., -200, meaning you must risk $200 to win $100), while underdogs carry a positive number (e.g., +170, meaning a $100 bet returns $170 profit).
How does the over/under (game total) work?
Oddsmakers set a projected combined score for the game, and bettors wager on whether the actual total will go over or under that number. For instance, if the total is set at 224.5 points, an over bet wins if both teams combine for 225 or more points. NBA totals can swing based on pace of play, rest situations, and injuries, so it's worth tracking those factors before placing a total bet.
What are NBA player props?
Player props are bets tied to an individual player's statistical performance rather than the game's outcome. Common prop bet markets include points scored, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, and combinations of those stats.
