NBA Predictions for Today: Picks and Best Bets

Philadelphia 76ers -4.5 (-115)

76ers at Pacers — 7:00 p.m. ET

Spread

Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have opened the season 3-1 while the Indiana Pacers enter Wednesday at 2-2.

Indiana has also struggled against the number early in the season, starting 1-3 ATS. Philadelphia has been the more reliable team overall, and laying fewer than five points gives us a manageable number on the road.

The Pacers' offense still has plenty of upside, but this is a difficult matchup against a Philadelphia team that has started the year looking like one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. It certainly doesn’t help things that Indiana will be sans Ivica Zubac (ankle) in this clash with Joel Embiid.

Give me the Sixers at -4.5.

Hornets-Pistons Under 214.5 (-110)

Hornets at Pistons — 7:00 p.m. ET

Total Points

Under

This is one of the lowest totals on Wednesday's board, but I'm still willing to play the under.

The Charlotte Hornets have gone under the total in all four games this season. Charlotte's offense has been inconsistent without Kon Knueppel, and the Hornets have already been held below 105 points twice.

The Detroit Pistons are also playing the second night of a back-to-back after facing the Knicks on Tuesday.

That combination of Charlotte's early-season under trend and Detroit's scheduling spot push me toward the under.

Chicago Bulls +7.5 (-115)

Knicks at Bulls — 8:00 p.m. ET

Spread

Chicago Bulls

I'm willing to take the points with the underdog Chicago Bulls against the New York Knicks.

New York is just 1-3 both straight up and against the spread to begin the season, and this isn't an ideal scheduling spot. The Knicks played Detroit on Tuesday night at MSG, so they'll be on the second half of a back-to-back.

Chicago, meanwhile, had Tuesday off.

The Bulls haven't played particularly well themselves, but getting 7.5 at home is appealing when the favorite is dealing with a rest disadvantage and has yet to consistently cover numbers this season.

I'll take Chicago +7.5.

Thunder-Mavericks Under 229.5 (-105)

Thunder at Mavericks — 9:30 p.m. ET

Total Points

Under

There are a lot of moving parts in this Oklahoma City Thunder-Dallas Mavericks matchup due to OKC’s injuries, and I like the under.

Oklahoma City has gone under the total in three of its first four games while Dallas has done the same.

That's a strong starting point for this pick, and both teams have enough defensive upside to keep this game from turning into a track meet.

OKC is without all of Chet Holmgren, Alex Caruso and Jalen Williams while Ajay Mitchell (ankle) is questionable. That adds plenty of volatility to this game, but even without those players, this is a strong Thunder squad, one that can still be stout defensively.

With both teams entering Wednesday at 1-3 to the over, I prefer the under.

NBA Betting -- Frequently Asked Questions

What does the point spread mean in NBA betting?

The point spread is a margin set by oddsmakers to level the playing field between two unevenly matched teams. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are listed at -7.5, they need to win by 8 or more points for a bet on them to cash. Conversely, a bet on their opponent at +7.5 wins if that team loses by 7 or fewer points — or wins outright.

What is the moneyline?

The moneyline is a straight-up bet on which team wins the game, with no spread involved. Favorites carry a negative number (e.g., -200, meaning you must risk $200 to win $100), while underdogs carry a positive number (e.g., +170, meaning a $100 bet returns $170 profit).

How does the over/under (game total) work?

Oddsmakers set a projected combined score for the game, and bettors wager on whether the actual total will go over or under that number. For instance, if the total is set at 224.5 points, an over bet wins if both teams combine for 225 or more points. NBA totals can swing based on pace of play, rest situations, and injuries, so it's worth tracking those factors before placing a total bet.

What are NBA player props?

Player props are bets tied to an individual player's statistical performance rather than the game's outcome. Common prop bet markets include points scored, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, and combinations of those stats.
