LSU-Alabama: Spread, Total, Breakdown and Best Bet for SEC Showdown
As hated SEC adversaries on the gridiron, the No. 14 LSU Tigers and No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide always provide an athletic spectacle when pitted together.
Simply, there are not many -- if any -- football communities more proud and decorated than the ones in Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa. In the current campaign, both programs are slotted within the top 15 of the College Football Playoff rankings. Per the CFB Playoff betting odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, Alabama has +250 odds to qualify for the CFP top four, while LSU shows at +550 in the same market.
Under head coach Nick Saban, the Tide will absolutely understand the assignment at hand this weekend. For the Tigers, head coach Brian Kelly is looking for his first win at 'Bama's Bryant-Denny Stadium. A victory for the "Bayou Bengals" on Saturday would mark two in a row over Saban for Kelly.
With kickoff swiftly approaching, let's dive into the odds and lines, keeping an emphasis on the most valuable of the traditional betting markets.

LSU at Alabama Matchup Analysis
Notably, LSU was victorious in their most recent meeting with the Tide. That bid came back on November 5th, 2022 in Baton Rouge and featured quarterback Jayden Daniels running for a 25-yard game-winning touchdown. A year later, can the Tigers produce similar magic on the road?
Fast-forward to now, and Alabama is ranked third in the entire country, according to ESPN's CFB power index (FPI), with a mark of 23.5. On that same scale, LSU (21.3 FPI) shows up at 10th overall. Admittedly, that is quite close, especially considering both of these universities are grouped together in the SEC West and have faced a similar schedule.
At 7-1, 'Bama's marquee wins thus far have come against the Mississippi Rebels and Tennessee Volunteers, vanquishing both by two touchdowns. The Crimson Tide's lone loss in 2023 came versus the Texas Longhorns.
LSU has played to a 6-2 record to this point in 2023. Their resume-padding victories include road wins at the Missouri Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs -- both by double-digits. However, Louisiana State suffered two losses back in September; they were defeated by the Florida State Seminoles in Orlando before dropping a game in Oxford to Ole Miss.
This year's meeting between the Tigers and Tide will feature dueling dual-threat quarterbacks. Daniels is a Heisman hopeful, having already tossed 25 touchdowns in addition to scoring 5 more with his legs. The Arizona State Sun Devils transfer has committed only three interceptions on the year.
For Alabama, Jalen Milroe is a talented signal-caller in his own right. As a sophomore, Milroe is playing well behind a completion clip of 64.7% on 10.6 yards per attempt. His QBR of 76.5 isn't too shabby, either. On the ground, Milroe also has five scores.
When it comes to defense, the Tide field the superior group. Through eight contests in 2023, 'Bama has surrendered only 16.5 PPG. Linebacker Dallas Turner has been an absolute gamewrecker, logging seven total sacks and 10.5 TFL on the year. LSU should scheme their offense to account for Turner, to say the least.
The Fighting Tigers have been nothing special on D this season. They are allowing nearly 400 total YPG (395.0). Additionally, LSU has already given up more than 30 points in four separate contests, surrendering as many as 55 to Ole Miss. Senior safety Andre Sam is LSU's defensive leader this year, amassing 49 tackles, 3 picks and 3 passes defended.
LSU at Alabama Best Bet
Alabama -3.0
Per numberFire's projections, the Crimson Tide are forecasted to win by a score of 29.99-25.56. In regards to the current spread of a field goal, Alabama is viewed as the safer play.
Personally, my preference is in line with numberFire's model. With this game Tuscaloosa, I will gladly lay three points with the Tide.
