Klay Thompson to Mavericks: How Have the Betting Odds Shifted?

The NBA's free agency has certainly started with a boom. Following the news of Paul George to the Philadelphia 76ers, Klay Thompson took the spotlight by agreeing to a deal with the Dallas Mavericks.

Following their loss in the NBA Finals, Dallas keeps building, adding the five-time All-Star guard alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. How impactful was this move, though?

Let's look at what the signing means for the Mavericks and how it's impacted FanDuel Sportsbook's NBA odds.

Klay Thompson to Mavericks Betting Impact

Prior to the signing, Dallas was listed at +1000 odds to win the NBA Finals. The odds have stayed the same even after the Klay signing, with the Mavericks still carrying +1000 odds to win the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

Dallas also still holds the fourth-shorted odds to win the Western Conference (+500) and the shortest odds to win the Southeast Division (+120). In the division, the Mavs are holding a narrow lead over the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans to win their second consecutive divisional crown.

What It Means for the Mavericks

As the NBA Finals odds suggest, the addition of Thompson may not do a ton for Dallas' chances of grabbing another NBA title.

This isn't a major surprise considering Thompson's steady decline. He found himself in a bench role for the Golden State Warriors for several games last season, which was the first time since Thompson's rookie campaign in 2011-12 that he was out of the starting five. Overall, his numbers were down with 17.9 points per game (PPG), his lowest since 2012-13.

Thompson has held field goal percentages (FG%) of 43.6% or lower for three straight seasons. The 34-year-old guard has a pretty straightforward game these days -- shoot the three-ball. That should fit well with the Mavericks, who shot the fourth-most three-point shots per game in the 2023-24 season. Thompson managed to record a 118.2 offensive rating in the 2023-24 season, his best over the last three seasons.

While the addition of Thompson doesn't move Dallas closer to being the NBA title betting favorite, Klay could help the Mavs secure a higher win total and better seeding in the upcoming season.
