Farmers Insurance Open Key Stats

For golfers playing all four rounds, they'll be on the South Course for three of them. That's where we have ShotLink data from, as well.

Torrey Pines is a relatively tough setup year in and year out -- especially when compared to the other events in January, which are more scoring-friendly.

The South Course was the longest on Tour a year ago, and while the fairways are tight, the rough isn't very penalizing. Therefore, distance wins out over accuracy in terms of importance.

The greens are smaller than average on Tour on the South Course and average on the North Course. Notably, the South Course's poa greens are some of the hardest to putt on among any course we see on Tour.

Farmers Insurance Open Betting Picks

These picks stand out relative to their FanDuel Sportsbook golf betting odds based on either my simulation model or other factors -- including my overall stats model, which accounts for the most important stats for this week's event. All stats cited below originate at datagolf and reference ranks relative to the field over the past 50 rounds unless otherwise noted.

Xander Schauffele

To Win (+900)

Xander Schauffele and Torrey Pines is quite the connection from a narrative standpoint, given he is a San Diego native and went to college at San Diego State. His career at Torrey Pines featured four missed cuts in his first five starts, but he has since finished T2, T34, and T13 at the Farmers over the past three years. Schauffele is rightfully the betting favorite, per my sims. He's a great all-around player.

Sungjae Im

To Win (+2000)

To Finish Top 10 (+240)

Im has played twice in 2024 on the PGA Tour: T5 at The Sentry and T25 at The American Express. The wedge play has been negative over his ShotLink rounds in that span, yet he's putting well and hitting fairways. Im -- despite a lack of distance -- has finished T6 and T4 at Torrey Pines over the past two years, and he has made all five cuts here, too.

Nicolai Højgaard

To Win (+5500)

To Finish Top 10 (+450)

Højgaard is a name to monitor in 2024. To end 2023 on the DP World Tour, Højgaard finished 2nd at the Nedbank Golf Challenge and won the DP World Tour Championship. So far this month, he has been T25 at the Dubai Invitational and T7 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic -- and he putted poorly in both of those starts. He has distance to take Torrey Pines as deep as he needs in his debut.

Beau Hossler

To Finish Top 10 (+550)

To Finish Top 20 (+240)

While Hossler isn't long off the tee, he can gain yards with driver, as he has done at Torrey Pines in five straight starts. The overall results are weak, though he's putted poorly two straight years here, which is atypical for him. He's 16th in true strokes gained per round over the past 50 rounds, via datagolf.

Adam Schenk

To Finish Top 20 (+330)

Schenk is a top-10 iron player in this field over the past 50 rounds and finished T20 here a year ago. He's also solid from 150 to 200 yards out, generally a key area at Torrey Pines.

Farmers Insurance Open Daily Fantasy Golf Picks

These picks stand out relative to their FanDuel daily fantasy golf salary based on my stats model, which accounts for the most important stats for this week's event. All stats cited below originate at datagolf and reference ranks relative to the field over the past 50 rounds. References to my combo model refer to a combination of long-term, field-adjusted form, key stat performance, and hole-by-hole-level strokes gained data.

Farmers Insurance Open DFS Studs

Xander Schauffele ($12,000 | +900)

Schauffele is my model's favorite play of the week both from a simulation standpoint and a stats standpoint. He ranks fifth in strokes gained: approach and sixth in putting. He's also fourth in strokes gained: tee to green overall and gains distance off the tee.

Sungjae Im ($11,100 | +2200)

Im has started with two top-25 finishes in 2024 and is putting well, and he has two straight top-six finishes at Torrey Pines, as well. Im's a top-20 short-game player in the field over the past 50 rounds, and his lack of distance (102nd) is really just average (-1.4 yards per drive), so it's more than workable at this salary.

Others to Consider:

  • Collin Morikawa ($11,800 | +1100)
  • Min Woo Lee ($10,900 | +2000)
  • Eric Cole ($10,600 | +4000)

Farmers Insurance Open DFS Mid-Range Plays

Nicolai Højgaard ($9,900 | +5500)

Højgaard's hot end to 2023 and transition to 2024 is why I like him in the betting markets this week. As far as fantasy goes, his salary makes him a great third stud in a lineup, and while he doesn't have experience at Torrey Pines, he has the right game for it, as he ranks 6th in distance, 8th in strokes gained: approach, and 16th in strokes gained: putting.

Luke List ($9,500 | +7500)

List is a pretty great player at Torrey Pines. He won here in 2022, a result bookended by a T10 in 2021 and a T25 in 2023. List's irons and driver are generally there, and his putting baseline has elevated in recent years (while still being a negative).

Others to Consider:

  • Daniel Berger ($9,700 | +8000)
  • Stephan Jaeger ($9,600 | +7000)
  • Adam Svensson ($9,400 | +10000)

Farmers Insurance Open DFS Value Plays

Adam Schenk ($8,800 | +12000)

Schenk missed the cut last week at The American Express after a T29 at The Sentry to open 2024, but his salary is now in the true value range. Despite that sub-$9,000 salary, Schenk is a top-10 iron player in the field over the past 50 rounds and was T20 here last year.

Alex Smalley ($8,700 | +11000)

Smalley ranks 14th in strokes gained: approach among the field over the past 50 rounds but is 90th or worse in both short game stats. That's not uncommon for someone at a salary like this. He has made two straight cuts here in his only starts at Torrey and was T21 at The American Express last week despite losing strokes putting.

Others to Consider:

  • Sam Ryder ($8,900 | +15000)
  • Gary Woodland ($8,500 | +25000)
  • Michael Kim ($8,400 | +11000)
