England vs. Switzerland Analysis

England have underwhelmed in attack all tournament, but they've been excellent defensively. In the group stage, they mustered only 2.2 expected goals (xG), per FBRef's xG model, but gave up just 1.1 xG.

In the Round of 16, England were lucky to advance. They bested Slovakia by a 2-1 score in extra time, needing a late goal to force the extra periods. They lost the xG battle in that match 2.2-1.5. Prior to that match, Slovakia hadn't registered more than 0.8 xG in a game this tournament.

But despite all that, England are tournament co-favorites heading into the quarterfinals -- listed at +390 odds to win Euro 2024 -- getting a lift from being on the easier side of the bracket.

Switzerland haven't tasted defeat in this tourney, picking up two wins and two draws. They drew 1-1 against both Scotland and Germany in the group stage after starting the tournament with a win over Hungary. In the Round of 16, the Swiss notched a fairly comfortable 2-0 win over Italy.

Switzerland's xG numbers aren't amazing but also aren't bad. They've created 5.2 xG through four matches while conceding 4.3 xG. They'll surely like their chances given England's form.

Opta's model sees England as the favorite, giving the Three Lions a 44.9% chance to win. A Swiss win (26.0%) and a draw (29.0%) are nearly equally likely.

MasseyRatings doesn't agree. They have Switzerland as the favorite, handing the Swiss 37% win odds, compared to 33% for England.

The Euro 2024 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook favor England, listing them at +120 to win in regulation. The +120 moneyline implies win odds of 45.4% -- right in line with Opta.
