3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Tuesday 8/15/23
Stacking is an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. Correlation drives upside, giving your lineups a slate-winning ceiling when your stacks explode.
This piece will do the digging and the dirty work each day to determine which stacks are worth rostering on FanDuel's main slate. While we want upside, we also need to factor in game theory, especially in a sport as random as baseball.
The MLB DFS heat map at numberFire is a quick way to get a feel for the overall slate and which offenses are in a good spot. You can also check out numberFire's daily fantasy baseball projections to identify the slate's best bats.
Today is a Coors Field day between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks, so while you should of course look at those lineups (especially Arizona), we will focus on three other teams since we don't need to tell you what you already know there.
Let's look at the top stacks for today's main slate.
Atlanta Braves
Implied Total: 6.12 | Opposing Pitcher: Luis Severino
If you haven't figured it out by now, the Atlanta Braves should be in consideration for DFS lineups every single day. Today is no exception.
Atlanta's potent lineup will get their chance to put up more gaudy numbers when they take on the New York Yankees and their starter, Luis Severino.
Severino isn't the same pitcher he once was as he's in the midst of his worst season on the bump. He has dealt with injury woes since 2019 as the 63 2/3 innings he's pitched this season are his second most in that time -- but this is by far the worst he's looked statistically.
The righty has a brutal 5.01 SIERA and an even worse 6.65 FIP. While he was able to pitch only 102 innings a season ago, he was so much better in 2022 -- recording a 3.37 SIERA and 3.70 FIP. You don't even need to look at the advanced stats to know he's struggling as his ERA is inflated to 8.06, with Severino having allowed four or more runs in three straight starts.
When it comes to leading off your Braves stack, going with either Ronald Acuna ($4,800) or Matt Olson ($4,500) makes all the sense, per usual. Acuna has a .337/.423/.572 triple-slash line with 26 home runs and 55 stolen bases while Olson has a .276/.386/.621 line with his league-leading 43 home runs and 107 RBIs. A win-win with these two. They're both projected by numberFire for 15.3 FanDuel points.
It's tough to get both Acuna and Olson into DFS lineups, so consider any of Austin Riley ($4,000), Sean Murphy ($3,700), Michael Harris II ($3,200), and Marcell Ozuna ($2,700), as well.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Implied Total: 5.20 | Opposing Pitcher: Adrian Houser
The Los Angeles Dodgers have won eight straight games and should keep things rolling against the Milwaukee Brewers.
LA's lineup will take on Adrian Houser, who hasn't been one to worry about this season. Houser doesn't punch out many batters (18.1% strikeout rate). He also has a 4.66 SIERA and 4.22 FIP, which should say all you need to know about this matchup for the Dodgers.
When starting out any stack for LA, it shouldn't really be too difficult as Mookie Betts ($4,400) is always the best option to lead off with. His OF/2B/SS usage not only gives him the ability to play in essential spots in DFS lineups, but his output this season has been near MVP levels. Betts is mashing his way to a .406 wOBA and .292 ISO. He's totaled 31 home runs and 80 RBIs. It's been his best overall season since his MVP year in 2018.
Looking up and down the rest of the Dodgers' lineup, there are plenty of options to choose from. An enticing one is Max Muncy ($3,600). Muncy isn't going to hit for average, but he absolutely clobbers right-handers. He has 20 of his 28 home runs in the split this season along with a .371 wOBA.
You can also look to Freddie Freeman ($4,400), Will Smith ($3,600), James Outman ($2,900), and Chris Taylor ($2,600) as other options to fill out a Dodgers stack.
Boston Red Sox
Implied Total: 4.99 | Opposing Pitcher: Josiah Gray
After a day off, the Boston Red Sox are looking to keep their playoff hopes intact, and a series with the Washington Nationals should do just that.
The Nationals will send out Josiah Gray to try to slow down the Red Sox offense -- it doesn't look likely. While Gray has a solid 3.69 ERA and was an All-Star this season, he hasn't been all too impressive if you dive in deeper. Gray has a 5.01 SIERA and strikes out batters at a less than 20% rate. The hurler has allowed four and five runs in his last two outings. Sounds like a good day could be on the menu for Boston.
Justin Turner ($3,100) is a great piece to start off with. The long-time veteran has a .361 wOBA with 19 home runs, 73 RBIs, and a 126 wRC+. Projected for 14.7 FanDuel points, per numberFire's model, he should be a lock for any Red Sox stack you put together.
Rafael Devers ($3,500) is the power bat you want from the lineup as he leads the Red Sox with 26 home runs and 79 RBIs. numberFire has him projected for 13.7 FanDuel points.
Consider Masataka Yoshida ($3,100), Jarren Duran ($3,000), Triston Casas ($3,000), and Alex Verdugo ($2,800) as they make up the core of the Red Sox lineup and should get the most opportunities to deliver along with Turner and Devers.
