Warriors vs. Lakers Game 4 Analysis

After a bounce-back victory at home in Game 2, the Warriors' road struggles returned in Game 3. In a 30-point loss to the Lakers, Golden State turned in one of their worst performances of the postseason. After shooting 50.0% from three in Game 2, the Warriors shot just 29.5% from behind the arc in Game 3. They trailed the Lakers in rebounds (42-44), assists (26-27), and field goal percentage (39.6%-52.5%).

In addition to their shooting woes, the Warriors struggled tremendously with turnovers. They surrendered the ball to the Lakers a staggering 19 times, including 6 turnovers from Klay Thompson, 4 from Jordan Poole, and 3 from Stephen Curry. Golden State's 14.4 turnovers per game this postseason rank second-worst in the NBA.

It's not a new issue for the Warriors; they were the worst in the NBA during the regular season in this area, averaging 16.3 turnovers per game. During their run to the championship last postseason, they averaged 14.5 turnovers per game. Their elite three-point shooting can mask their turnover issues, but when they're cold from behind the arc, things can get ugly in a hurry -- especially because the Lakers aren't returning the favor. Their 10.0 turnovers per game are tied for the lowest mark in the league this postseason with the Miami Heat.

The Lakers also hold a massive edge in free throws attempted per game this series (27.7 to 13.0). That's a trend that matches these teams' performances in the regular season. The Lakers attempted a league-leading 26.6 free throws per game, and the Warriors attempted a league-worst 20.2.

The Warriors can regain homecourt advantage with a victory in Game 4, but to do so, they will need to cut down on their turnovers and rediscover their shooting form from Game 2. Failure to do so will force them into a 1-3 hole and require them to win three games in a row to avoid elimination. As it stands, the Lakers are favorites to win Game 4 (-144) and the series (-198).
