USA vs. Netherlands Analysis
The USWNT opened their World Cup campaign with a three-goal victory over Vietnam, but the final score was closer than most were expecting it to be.
The United States controlled the game from start to finish, finishing with a commanding lead in shots (28-0), shots on target (7-0), possession (66%), pass accuracy (79% to 48%), and corners (9-0). The result was never in doubt, but even with a missed penalty kick, the United States still generated only 4.7 expected goals (xG), per FBRef, versus one of the tourney's lowest-rated sides. At the end of the day though, the result is all that matters, and the Americans got the job done.
On Wednesday, the task gets much more difficult. The Netherlands is the ninth-ranked team in FIFA's rankings and comes into this match off a 1-0 victory over Portugal in their opening fixture. The match was not as close as the final score suggests as the Netherlands finished with more shots (12-2), shots on target (5-1), possession (57%), pass accuracy (73% to 63%), and corners (3-1). Their 1.7 xG greatly exceeded Portugal's 0.1 xG.
These two sides enter Wednesday's showdown with plenty of recent history. After defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in the 2019 World Cup Final, the USWNT also eliminated them on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Olympics. Wednesday's match will be the third chapter between these two sides in major international tournaments, and if the first two are any indication, we are in for a treat.
Both the USWNT and the Netherlands are heavy favorites to advance out of Group E after their opening-round victories, but this match will go a long way toward determining who wins the group. Whoever wins on Wednesday will likely take the top spot in the group and get an easier path through the knockout stages. That is a significant prize for two teams that have their eyes set on winning the tournament.
The difference between winning Group E and finishing second could be the difference between a Round-of-16 showdown with Sweden (3rd in FIFA Rankings) or a clash with Italy (16th)/Argentina (28th). The result of this match will have tournament-altering consequences for both teams.
The USWNT enter Wednesday as favorites (-150), with a draw the second-most-likely outcome (+250). With the total at 2.5 goals and the under favored (-148), this is projected to be a low-scoring, tightly contested game. Looking at the defensive records for these teams, that makes sense -- both sides are allowing fewer than 0.5 goals per game over their last five matches.
For the United States, Alex Morgan (+140) has the best odds to find the back of the net. After Morgan failed to score against Vietnam, this is a bounce-back opportunity for the USWNT legend. Sophia Smith, who recorded two goals and an assist in a standout performance in the opener, has the second-best odds to score in this fixture (+170).
Regardless of the outcome, one thing is for sure -- this is the one group stage match you do not want to miss.
