Saratoga Picks: Travers Stakes Day, August 29, 2026

Key Takeaways:
- Saratoga’s 14-race Travers Day card is packed with stakes action, including five graded races and three Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” events.
- The undercard offers a wide mix of dirt sprints, dirt routes, and turf racing, with pace and trip likely to be especially important across the competitive fields.
- Englishman is the most accomplished horse in the H. Allen Jerkens field and owns a win over the same course and distance, but Local Knowledge could offer better value if the pace gets heated up front.
- Scottish Lassie gets the nod in the Personal Ensign after her Shuvee win and should be sharper second off the layoff, while Margie’s Intention has enough route form to make her interesting at 12-1.
- East Jabip should get another favorable setup on the front end in the Lake Placid, while Naomis brings two straight wins and strong European form into her first start for Chad Brown.
The summer meet at Saratoga reaches its height Saturday, September 29. The feature race of the day is the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes, the most important summer race for the three-year-old dirt route division. The Travers drew a blockbuster field including Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo, Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo, Haskell (G1) winner Baby Vino, Jim Dandy winner Renegade, and more.
The Travers, however, is not the only major race at Saratoga on Saturday. The card features five other graded-stakes races: the Personal Ensign (G1) for dirt-route fillies and mares, the Forego (G1) for open-company sprinters, the H. Allen Jerkens (G1) for sophomore sprinters, the Ballerina (G1) for filly and mare sprinters, and the Lake Placid (G2) for sophomore filly turf milers. Three of these races are Breeders’ Cup qualifiers: the Personal Ensign offers a bid to the Distaff, the Forego to the Dirt Mile, and the Ballerina to the Filly & Mare Sprint.
The 14-race card at the Spa gets underway at 11:05 a.m. EDT on Saturday, with graded-stakes action getting underway with the H. Allen Jerkens at 3:19 p.m. EDT. Wagering on the races is the best way to be part of the action from anywhere, and you can bet every race at Saratoga, and at tracks all over the country, on FanDuel.
Make sure to check the scratches and the weather before placing your bets. Weather is supposed to be beautiful in Saratoga on Saturday, but that can change closer to post time, and scratches can happen for any reason. Checking before you bet is the best way to make sure that the pace setup and class balance matches the race you’ve handicapped.
Horse Racing: Saratoga Race Course Expert Tips and Insights
Here are best bets and expert insights for three graded-stakes races on the Travers Stakes day card at Saratoga:
Race 8 - H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1), seven furlongs on the dirt - Local Knowledge, Englishman
FanDuel odds: 4-1 and 3-5
Local Knowledge (4-1) comes out of the Amsterdam Stakes (G2), the local prep for this race. He stalked the pace and battled down the lane to score in that race – he wasn’t far from the front, but wasn’t in a speed duel either. And, he even came from a little further off the pace in his debut victory at Keeneland. His ability to rate should help a lot here. Even with only five horses expected, he is running against a bunch of horses who are best proven right up on the front end. Even though he isn’t going to want to be very far off the pace, he should be in range without getting burned up, and a reasonable move forward from his last could have this Todd Pletcher charge picking them all off in the lane at a value price.
Englishman (3-5) marked himself as an extremely talented three-year-old sprinter on Belmont Stakes day when he tracked the pace and took complete command in the Woody Stephens (G1), run over the same course and distance as the Jerkens. This is a smaller field but could be a similarly tough test, if not a little tougher – he at least proved in the Woody Stephens that he could attend the pace instead of just setting it. But, he is unlikely to be far off the pace, and even with Solitude Dude pointed to Charles Town instead of this spot per a report from Daily Racing Form, Amberjack, Deep Flame, and Stickupwithoutagun stand to set up a lively pace for him to attend. He might be good enough to put them away and get it done. But, there’s also the possibility he regresses off his breakout effort – he’s the most likely winner, but not a complete lock at short odds.
Race 9 - Personal Ensign Stakes (G1), 1 ⅛ miles on the dirt - Scottish Lassie, Margie’s Intention
FanDuel odds: 7-5 and 12-1
A bid to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff is at stake in this race. With Nitrogen bouncing back after her second-place finish behind Sovereignty in the Whitney (G1), the two marquee names are Fully Subscribed and Scottish Lassie, the 1-2 finishers in the Shuvee (G2) over this course and distance July 24. The slight nod between that pair goes to Scottish Lassie (7-5), making her third start of the season for trainer Jorge Abreu. The pace looks likely to set up much like the Shufee did, with Snowyte likely to make the lead and Scottish Lassie getting the jump on Fully Subscribed. Last time Fully Subscribed finished well enough to score, but it was her third start of the season – only Scottish Lassie’s second and her first of the year at a route. This start should have Scottish Lassie fitter and better able to hold off Scottish Lassie without having to pay the Chad Brown tax at the windows, like those who bet Fully Subscribed will.
Among the longer-shot horses in the field, Margie’s Intention (12-1) has upside as one of the likely longest shots on the board. She needs to move forward from her last start, a win against softer in the Allaire DuPont Distaff at Laurel, but her credible third in the 1 ⅛-mile Beldame at Aqueduct suggests she has room to move forward. Especially given how well he is riding this summer at Saratoga, it’s a positive to see Manny Franco back in the irons for the first time since the Beldame, especially given how forwardly he was able to place her that day. If someone invades the two most logical horses in this race, it would be no surprise for that horse to be Margie’s Intention.
Race 10 - Lake Placid Stakes (G2), one mile on the turf course - East Jabip, Naomis
FanDuel odds: 6-1 and 3-1
East Jabip (6-1) lost by less than a length despite acting out before the 1 ⅛-mile Pucker Up last out, setting the pace before just getting caught late. She should get a clean outside trip on the front end this time around, much like she got in her debut win – but if someone really hits the gas inside of her, she has been able to win from a stalking place, too. Even though she has changed barns from Brian Lynch to Todd Pletcher since her last race, it’s nice to see that jockey Tyler Gaffalione follows her to the new barn, and she could get a great trip at a square price.
Trainer Chad Brown has dominated this race in recent years, and he sends out a pair. A mile may be short for his second-stringer Deep Learning, though Naomis (3-1) has put it together at that trip this year. She can go longer, as evidenced by the fact that she won at 1 ¼ miles on the lawn last year (yes, as a two-year-old!), but she has fired off wins in her last two, including a longshot triumph in the Prix de Sandringham (G2) at Chantilly last out. That proved she could hold her own against good horses in France, and led to her being privately purchased and sent to Brown. How forward she’ll be able to be in the United States is the big question, but she can pass horses and that win last out suggests that she doesn’t need rain-affected ground to shine.
