Olympic Soccer: Best Bets for Tuesday's Semifinals (8/6/24)

The women's soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics has reached the semifinal round. There are four teams left with both semifinals on Tuesday.

Olympic Soccer Best Bets

USWNT vs. Germany

United States Over 1.5 Goals (+108)

The US and Germany tangle in Tuesday's first semifinal at noon ET. It's a matchup of two teams ranked in the top five of FIFA's World Rankings -- Germany is fourth while the US is fifth.

These two teams have already met in this tourney, with the Americans winning by a 4-1 score in the group stage. I think the US has more attacking success in the second matchup.

Dating back to April's SheBelieves Cup, the Americans have scored multiple goals in five of their last six competitive matches. The only exception was a 1-0 win over Japan last weekend in the Olympic quarterfinals, but even in that match, the US took 15 shots and had 71% of the possession, so they played pretty well.

In this tournament, Germany have given up only one goal outside of their match versus the United States. However, against Canada in the quarterfinals, Germany was fortunate to win. The Germans conceded 22 total shots (5 on target) to the Canadiens while generating only 13 shots (1 on target) themselves, so they've struggled versus top-notch foes this tourney.

The US should be able to generate chances against Germany -- as was the case when these two teams clashed in the group stage -- and I like the Americans' chances to score at least twice.

Spain vs. Brazil

Spain Over 1.5 Goals (-146)

Spain dodged a bullet in the quarterfinals, coming back from a 2-0 deficit versus Colombia to win in penalties. It continued a tourney-long theme for Spain of meh results as they have won by more than a single goal just once in four matches.

But there are reasons to be optimistic about Spain. They are still the world's number-one team, per FIFA's World Rankings, and they're also a +125 favorite to win the goal medal. Plus, their performances have usually been better than the final results.

In the draw versus Colombia last weekend, Spain actually took 33 shots and had 77% of the possession, compared to 7 shots and 23% possession for Colombia. It was a similar story in a 2-1 win over Japan in group play as Spain out-shot Japan 14 to 4 and out-possessed them 75% to 25% despite the final scoreline making it look like a tight match.

As is the case with the first semifinal, Spain and Brazil have already played this tournament -- a 2-0 group-stage win for Spain. The match was even more lopsided than that score indicates as Spain held a whopping 83% of the possession and took 28 shots (10 on target) to Brazil's 6 (3 on target).

I think things play out similarly on Tuesday and like Spain to score multiple goals.
