BYU vs Notre Dame Prediction and Picks

Notre Dame

This is a big number on the road against an undefeated top-10 team, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish‘s defensive advantage makes the Fighting Irish worth backing.

Notre Dame has allowed only 11.0 points per game through six contests, the fourth-lowest average in the country. The Irish are also permitting just 214.2 total yards per game, including 155.8 passing yards and only 58.3 rushing yards per contest. Opponents are averaging a minuscule 2.1 yards per carry.

The Brigham Young Cougars have been excellent to this point, but its offense has not consistently faced defenses of this caliber. The Cougars scored only 17 points at TCU two games ago before exploding for 506 total yards against Iowa State. That Iowa State performance was impressive, but Notre Dame represents a much tougher matchup.

The Irish have also been rolling offensively, averaging 44.0 points per game. They've scored at least 37 points in five of six games, while Heisman candidate C.J. Carr has thrown for 1,378 yards, 16 touchdowns and only one interception.

BYU is good enough defensively to keep this competitive for a bit, especially at home, but Notre Dame's ability to control the line of scrimmage on both sides gives the Irish a path to pulling away.

Bear Bachmeier Under 189.5 Passing Yards (-114)

Bear Bachmeier is coming off his best passing performance of the season, but I think it’ll be much tougher sledding this week.

Bachmeier threw for 329 yards against Iowa State, but he's averaging only 206.6 passing yards per game for the season. His previous four passing totals were 62, 227, 217 and 198 yards.

Notre Dame's secondary presents a major step up. The Irish are giving up just 155.8 passing yards per game, and opponents are completing only 60.8% of their passes. Notre Dame has also allowed just six passing touchdowns through six games while averaging 2.3 takeaways per contest.

Bachmeier's rushing ability can also work in our favor on this prop. He has 239 rushing yards this season and ran for 109 yards against Iowa State, so BYU can manufacture offense without needing him to pile up passing production.

With Notre Dame limiting opposing passing attacks at an elite level, this number looks a little high despite Bachmeier's big Week 6 performance.

College Football Betting FAQ

What are the most common college football bets?

The most common college football bets are the point spread, moneyline, and game total. Bettors can also wager on player props, team totals, alternate spreads, and futures such as conference champions or the national championship winner.

How does the point spread work in college football betting?

The point spread gives one team a handicap to create a more even betting market. If a team is listed at -7.5, it must win by at least eight points for a spread bet on that team to cash. A team listed at +7.5 can lose by seven points or fewer — or win outright — and still cover the spread.

What does over/under mean in college football?

An over/under, also called a game total, is a wager on the combined number of points scored by both teams. Bettors can choose whether the final score will finish over or under the sportsbook's posted total.

What should you consider before betting on college football?

Matchups, quarterback play, offensive and defensive efficiency, injuries, pace, home-field advantage, and coaching tendencies can all be important.
