NL Rookie of the Year Odds: Will Corbin Carroll's Shoulder Slow His Roll?
Throughout the 2023 MLB season, the National League Rookie of the Year race has not been particularly close.
Rookie outfielder Corbin Carroll has been a lightning rod near the top of the Arizona Diamondbacks' lineup. The speedster has a wide skillset, combining power hitting with rampant activity on the basepaths.
Still, Carroll exited multiple games leading up to the All-Star break due to an ailing right shoulder -- one that he had surgery on back in May of 2021. He has only missed five total games this season, but what will happen to his ROY odds if the shoulder worsens?
The Senior Circuit does boast other dynamic rookies that are worthy of a look. Let's see who is still in the running.

Corbin Carroll, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks (-360)
At the moment, it really is Carroll's award to lose. He's a -360 favorite to reflect that. By the break, he had already amassed 18 home runs and 26 stolen bases for a D-Backs team that is tied for first place in the NL West. His positive effect on the ballclub has been undeniable.
As a rookie, Carroll is carrying a weighted on-base average (wOBA) of .389 while slugging at a .549 clip. His 63 runs scored (tied with Shohei Ohtani) in the first half has him within the top 10 of all MLB players this year. If it weren't for Ronald Acuna's current season, we might be talking more about the rook for NL MVP; Carroll is +3500 in that market.
Elly De La Cruz, 3B/SS, Cincinnati Reds (+280)
If you have not heard of Elly De La Cruz by now, you have likely been away from any technology for quite some time. In which case, more power to you!
The 6-foot-5 De La Cruz is a rookie infielder that can quite literally do it all. There's just one catch; De La Cruz has only played in 30 career games for his Cincinnati Reds by the 2023 All-Star break. For comparison, Carroll has played in 86 games this year.
30 contests is a diminutive sample size, but De La Cruz has already accomplished revered baseball feats such as hitting for the cycle and swiping three bags in one inning, which included him stealing home plate.

I'm in no way dismissing Carroll's efforts in this campaign, but the switch-hitting De La Cruz has Cooperstown written all over him at the young age of 21. If Carroll's shoulder causes him to miss a chunk of time in the second half, De La Cruz's stock will continue to rise.
Matt McLain, SS/2B/3B, Cincinnati Reds (+3900)
Matt McLain is another rookie the Reds have had with the big club since the season started. A middle infielder who can be an everyday shortstop, McLain also brings a harmonious blend of speed and power. Through 50 appearances this year, he has an OPS of .878 with 7 homers.
The kid from Orange County, California flashes the leather on a regular basis. With only one error in his big league career, McLain is a plus fielder. The Reds often keep him at short while playing De La Cruz at third base.
Again, should Carroll miss extended time in the second half, McLain will have extreme value with +3900 NL Rookie of the Year odds. McLain does have a 20-game jump on his teammate De La Cruz if Elly were forced to miss time, as well.
