NFL Predictions and Picks for Week 7
Sunday's NFL Week 7 slate offers plenty of betting opportunities once the early international game between Pittsburgh and New Orleans is out of the way. The afternoon schedule features several intriguing divisional matchups along with a handful of favorites that could be positioned to separate from their opponents.
Using the latest NFL odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, here are three of my favorite bets for Sunday's games.
Vikings -6.5 (-105)
Indianapolis Colts at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m. ET
Spread
The Minnesota Vikings enter Week 7 as one of the NFL's best teams, and their defense gives them a significant advantage against the Indianapolis Colts.
Minnesota is allowing only 12.8 points per game, the lowest mark in the league. The Vikings have also surrendered just 259.8 total yards per game while limiting opponents to 86.6 rushing yards per contest. That's particularly important against a Colts offense that leans heavily on Jonathan Taylor and the ground game.
Indianapolis has been far less impressive on defense. The Colts are giving up 27.3 points and 351.2 total yards per game, creating a favorable setup for Minnesota — a team coming off a bye — to build a lead rather than having to grind out a close game.
The Vikings are 5-0 entering this matchup (4-1 ATS), and their ability to control the Colts' best offensive weapon makes laying less than a touchdown appealing.
Rams -4.5 (-108)
Los Angeles Rams at Las Vegas Raiders, 4:25 p.m. ET
Spread
The Los Angeles Rams' 2-4 record doesn't tell the whole story about how well they've played.
Los Angeles enters Sunday ranked third in the NFL in total offense at 401.3 yards per game, including 288.7 passing yards per game. Matthew Stafford has thrown for a league-high 1,794 yards through six games while completing 65.9% of his passes.
The matchup is enticing against a Las Vegas Raiders defense surrendering 371.7 total yards per game. Opponents have averaged 6.25 yards per play against Las Vegas while the Rams are generating 6.02 yards per offensive play this campaign.
Los Angeles has also been much better defensively than Las Vegas. The Rams are allowing only 294.0 total yards per game, third-fewest in the NFL, and just 167.0 passing yards per contest. Las Vegas, meanwhile, has been held to only 79.2 rushing yards per game, so it could have trouble finding an alternative if the Rams slow down the passing game.
Despite Los Angeles' disappointing record, their underlying numbers are still pretty darn good, and I think they’ll get back on track this week versus the Raiders.
Packers-Lions Over 52.5 Points (-115)
Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions, 4:25 p.m. ET
Total Points
If you're searching for points, the NFC North showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions stands out.
Detroit is averaging 32.8 points and 393.8 total yards per game, with its passing attack producing 279.6 yards per contest. The Lions have been especially productive at Ford Field, where they've averaged 31.0 points through their first two home games.
The problem for Detroit is a defense that has made shootouts almost unavoidable. The Lions are surrendering 29.6 points and an NFL-high 404.4 total yards per game. They've been particularly vulnerable through the air, giving up 297.4 passing yards per game.
That weakness lines up nicely for Green Bay. While the Packers haven't been an explosive scoring offense overall, they're throwing for 269.3 yards per game, giving them a path to keeping pace if Detroit pushes this game into the 30s. They also might get Josh Jacobs back this week, and Jacobs could provide a lift to a Packers ground game that’s been awful thus far.
With Detroit's offense averaging nearly 33 points per game and its defense struggling to prevent opponents from moving the ball, this divisional matchup has the ingredients for a shootout. A tight spread (3.0) helps, too, as both offenses should have to keep their foot on the gas.
NFL Betting FAQ
What Does the Point Spread Mean in NFL Betting?
The point spread is designed to create a handicap between two teams. For example, if a team is listed at -3.5, it needs to win by at least four points for a spread bet on that team to cash. A team listed at +3.5 can either win outright or lose by three points or fewer and still cover the spread.
What Is an Over/Under in NFL Betting?
An over/under — also called a game total — is a wager on the combined number of points scored by both teams. If the total is set at 47.5, an over bet wins if the teams combine for 48 or more points, while an under bet wins if they combine for 47 or fewer.
What Is a Moneyline Bet in the NFL?
A moneyline wager is a bet on which team will win the game outright, regardless of the final margin. Favorites generally have shorter odds, while underdogs typically offer a larger potential return because they are considered less likely to win.
What Should You Consider Before Betting on an NFL Game?
Matchups, injuries, offensive and defensive efficiency, weather, home-field advantage, and recent performance can all be important factors. It's also worth monitoring line movement because NFL odds can change throughout the week as sportsbooks react to injuries, betting activity, and new information.
