Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. (elbow, quad) lands on IL; no timetable for return
The San Diego Padres officially moved Fernando Tatis Jr. (elbow, quad) to the Injured List ahead of Monday's game against the Washington Nationals.
What It Means
Padres manager Mike Shildt told media members that the star outfielder is dealing with pain while decelerating as well as while in motion, so the team is officially moving to shut him down until he can recover properly from his elbow and quad injuries. The team offered no timetable for his return to the field, but the .500 Padres could use him back sooner rather than later as they attempt to nab a spot in the playoffs. As of this writing, the Padres' +130 odds to make the playoffs on FanDuel Sportsbook rank second-shortest among eligible teams in the National League, trailing the Milwaukee Brewers (-560).
Tatis had been having an excellent summer, bringing his season-long marks up to 14 homers, 50 runs, 36 RBI, 8 stolen bases, and a .279 average across 345 plate appearances. The Padres could see more of David Peralta and now Bryce Johnson in the lineup until Tatis can return.
