MLB Picks and Predictions for Today

Angels at Red Sox NRFI (-154)

This is my favorite NRFI spot of the night, with Reid Detmers and Patrick Sandoval starting.

Detmers has been excellent this season, recording a 3.44 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 28% strikeout rate over 162 innings. He's been particularly sharp early in games lately, holding opponents scoreless in the first inning in each of his past six starts and in eight of his past nine.

Sandoval's overall numbers aren't nearly as impressive, as he owns a 4.41 ERA and 1.73 WHIP. However, the matchup is enticing. The Los Angeles Angels sit 26th in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season, and they've been MLB's worst offense against lefties over the last 30 days. Sandoval has also kept his opponent scoreless in the opening inning in 80% of his starts.

Sandoval's first-inning track record combined with Detmers' recent dominance makes this my preferred NRFI of Tuesday's slate.

William Contreras to Record 2+ H/R/RBI (-125)

Cubs vs. Brewers, 7:41 p.m. ET

Lefty David Peterson is getting the start for the Chicago Cubs. That pushes me toward the Milwaukee Brewers‘ right-handed hitters, and I ultimately land on William Contreras in the hits/runs/RBI market.

Peterson owns a 4.31 SIERA and 19.5% K rate on the season. He’s a fairly average hurler, and righties have found a good level of success against him, posting a .358 wOBA versus Peterson.

Contreras has a solid .337 wOBA with the platoon advantage this season, and he’s been swinging it well of late, generating a .412 wOBA over his last 68 plate appearances. He’s also been more productive at home (.358 wOBA) than on the road (.317 wOBA).

After Peterson departs, Contreras will see a Cubs bullpen that has the ninth-worst xFIP over the last 30 days.

Jack Perkins Over 3.5 Strikeouts (-152)

Blue Jays at Athletics, 9:41 p.m. ET

Jack Perkins‘ season has been a bit of a roller-coaster. However, he can miss bats, and I think the market is underrating him a little today.

Perkins has pitched to a 3.91 SIERA, 25.7% K rate and 12.3% swinging-strike rate. Those are dang good numbers. But his bugaboos have been dingers and free passes as he’s issued a 10.4% walk rate while giving up 1.65 homers per nine. When hitters make contact, it’s usually loud, and that’s especially a problem when Perkins is pitching at home like he is tonight.

With that said, he’s fanned at least four in four consecutive starts, registering games of six and seven punchouts in that span. He’s gotten up to at least 86 pitches in two of his last three games, and despite this matchup being at homer-happy Sutter Health Park, Perkins has good enough stuff to strike out at least four Toronto Blue Jays.

What does "total bases" mean as a prop bet?

The total bases prop counts the bases a batter earns from hits in a single game:

• Single = 1 base
• Double = 2 bases
• Triple = 3 bases
• Home run = 4 bases

Walks, hit-by-pitches, and stolen bases do not count. A typical total bases line is set at 1.5 or 2.5. Betting over 1.5 means you need at least a double, or two singles.
