DJ Herz Over 3.5 Strikeouts (-130)

Nationals vs. Tigers, 6:41 p.m. ET

DJ Herz makes his long-awaited return to the Washington Nationals' rotation tonight, and I'm willing to back his swing-and-miss stuff right away.

Herz hasn't pitched in the majors since 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but strikeouts were a major part of his success as a rookie. The left-hander punched out 106 hitters across 88 2/3 innings that season, equating to a stellar 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings. He also generated a 27.7% strikeout rate.

The punchouts have continued during his rehab work in 2026 as he put up a 29.1% K rate in 25.2 innings.

The Detroit Tigers are a nice opponent for Herz to face in his return. The Tigers' projected lineup owns a 24.4% strikeout rate, giving Herz plenty of opportunities to generate whiffs with the fastball-changeup combination that fueled his success in 2024.

The obvious concern is workload. Herz threw 65 pitches in his most recent rehab outing and will likely be around 70-75 pitches tonight. However, we don't need him to work particularly deep into the game to clear such a low number. Four strikeouts across roughly four innings is well within reach given Herz's career strikeout production and the matchup, making the over on 3.5 strikeouts an appealing prop.

Zebby Matthews Over 15.5 Outs Record (-125)

Twins vs. Giants, 9:46 p.m. ET

Zebby Matthews has been pitching deep enough into games lately to make the over on 15.5 outs an intriguing target tonight.

Matthews has worked 39 1/3 innings across his past seven starts, averaging 16.9 outs per outing. He's completed at least 5 1/3 innings in four of those seven starts, including outings of 7 innings and 8 1/3 innings during that span.

More recently, Matthews bounced back from a rough start in Detroit by tossing six scoreless innings against a dangerous Yankees lineup last time out. He allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out eight, and reports indicate Minnesota is still comfortable letting him work in the neighborhood of 95-plus pitches.

The matchup tonight at the San Francisco Giants should give Matthews a chance to pitch efficiently, too. San Francisco owns just a 99 wRC+ at home this season, and that number has fallen to 92 over the past 14 days. The Giants have also struck out 25.0% of the time during that recent stretch.

Between Matthews’ recent workload, a favorable pitching environment at Oracle Park, and San Francisco's underwhelming recent offense, I like Matthews to get beyond 15.5 outs tonight.
