Miami's receiver room has been a running theme all preseason — a group so thin that a third-round rookie and an ACL rehab case have both been able to shoot up the depth chart in a matter of weeks. But the receiver currently holding the WR1 job by default is Malik Washington, and the case for drafting him is a genuinely mixed one.

The Opportunity Is Real and Confirmed

Washington isn't a projection at this point — he's Miami's actual starter. He opened the preseason with the Dolphins' first-team offense, catching all three of his targets for 15 yards, including receptions on the team's first two offensive plays of the entire preseason. As of the most recent depth chart update, Washington is still listed as a starter alongside rookie Caleb Douglas and veteran Jalen Tolbert.

The opportunity behind him is genuinely wide open. Jaylen Waddle was traded to Denver this offseason, and Tyreek Hill's season-ending knee injury last year is what originally opened the door for Washington in the first place. Behind him on the depth chart sit unproven names — Tolbert, Tutu Atwell, Terrace Marshall Jr., and rookies Douglas, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman Jr. — none of whom have established themselves as a clear alternative. Washington's own 46 catches last year trailed only running back De'Von Achane among returning Dolphins pass-catchers.

The Real Concern: He Hasn't Been Efficient With Volume

This is the part worth being honest about. Washington's 6.9 yards-per-catch average last season was the worst mark among any wide receiver with at least 40 receptions in the entire league — not close to the pack, but the outright worst. Most of his catches came on shallow, underneath routes, and even with regular target volume once Hill went down, he never turned that opportunity into meaningful per-play production. His fantasy viability genuinely depends on either a dramatic efficiency jump or a high enough target share that the shallow numbers add up anyway.

There's also the Malik Willis variable. Willis is a legitimate athlete with real rushing upside of his own, but he's making his first extended run as a starting quarterback on a very small career sample, and whatever chemistry he and Washington build will be tested in real games for the first time this year.

So, Is He a Sleeper?

Washington's current ADP sits around pick 150 — deep into a standard draft, roughly the 13th round in most formats. At that price, this is a legitimate case where the floor of the pick matters more than the ceiling. Even a modest bump in efficiency, paired with the WR1 role he's already confirmed to hold, could get him into every-week flex conversation territory, and his added rushing utility (110 yards and a score on just 17 carries last year) gives him a path to production even on quiet receiving days. He's not going to win your league by himself, and the red flags on his tape are real. But as a specifically cheap, low-cost bet on volume in an offense with almost no other proven target competition, Washington is a defensible late-round flier — just don't expect him to be more than that until he actually shows he can do something with the ball once it's in his hands.
