Tricky. SNOW MAIDEN (9) went close at Launceston on debut and then raced handier here and lacked finishing punch. She placed in a trial at the track since and will be sharper coming back 1f. She should prove tough to beat. SEDNA (8) has threatened at Hobart her last two and started $3.60 the latest. Races handy and is a chance to break through. ALPINE DAME (4) would be a hope on her near miss here two back when she led them up. On a quick backup and will get every chance. ALPINE COWGIRL (3) has switched from a Victorian stable on a 59-day return. May find this a bit short but expect her to be finishing it off. SWING LOW (10) is a former Victorian who deserves a betting watch first-up.

Claiming Race

A race in which horses are entered for a certain price, or claiming tag, which is also their sales price. An owner can claim any horse entered for the tag before the race begins, and owns them as soon as the gates open.

Condition Book

A list of upcoming races issued by the racing secretary, where the conditions of races to be run over the next few weeks are written.

Fractions

The times recorded during the race; with timing starting just past the gate or when the gates open, then parroted for the quarter, half, three-quarters etc. Used as an indication of ability and speed.
