Fantasy Football Fallout of Tyrone Tracy's Injury

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. suffered an ankle injury in practice today. According to The Athletic's Dan Duggan, the team immediately put an air cast on his ankle, and Tracy was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

(UPDATE: Tracy has since been diagnosed with a low-ankle sprain and is considered week-to-week, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.)

What is the fantasy football fallout of Tyrone Tracy's injury, and how does that impact Devin Singletary and Eric Gray?

Tyrone Tracy Injury Outlook

It's too early to definitively say how long Tyrone Tracy will be out, but it's safe to assume he'll miss an extended period of time.

Tracy wasn't expected to be a starter right away, but the rookie fifth-round pick was reportedly the early leader to be Devin Singletary's primary backup. But after this injury and Eric Gray's 98-yard, two-touchdown performance in their preseason opener, Gray looks to be the clear backup in New York.

Fantasy-wise, Gray likely won't have any independent value so long as Singletary is healthy. He carried the ball more than three times just once last season -- a 12-carry, 28-yard dud that resulted in just 3.1 half-PPR fantasy points.

But Singletary should get a slight bump in rankings if Tracy misses an extended period of time. Though he was the clear starter after joining the Giants on a three-year, $16.5 million deal this offseason, Tracy's pass-catching prowess was a real threat to Singletary's playing time. It was certainly conceivable that the 27-year-old Singletary would cede work to the rookie as the season progressed.

That's less of a worry now.

After finishing as the RB31 (9.0 half-PPR points per game) in largely a split role last season, Singletary is the clear top back in New York. He sports an average draft position (ADP) of 91.7, according to FantasyPros' consensus ADP, but now appears set for a three-down role.

Per the NFL odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, Singletary's season rushing yards prop is set at 750.5.

Last year, he rushed for 898 yards -- his third straight season over 800.

With Tracy's season-long status in doubt, Singletary could be primed for an even bigger workload than we originally anticipated. That makes him someone to target in the eighth or ninth round of fantasy drafts.

Eric Gray becomes an intriguing handcuff for later in the season.
