Running Backs to Buy Low in Fantasy Football

Chase Brown, Cincinnati Bengals

Chase Brown is a strong buy-low target because his production hasn't matched the workload he's receiving in the Cincinnati Bengals offense.

Brown has 94 carries and 36 receptions through seven games, giving him 130 total touches despite scoring just one touchdown. He has also handled a significant portion of Cincinnati's backfield work, including 12 carries and eight catches in the Bengals' most recent game.

The lack of touchdowns is particularly appealing for a buy-low opportunity as Brown has the workload and passing-game involvement necessary for his fantasy scoring to improve if he converts more of his opportunities into touchdowns.

There’s a variable here that Cincy has been rumored to be in the market for Jonathan Taylor. JT coming to the Bengals would obviously crush Brown’s value, but as long as Brown is still the Bengals’ RB1, he’s a quality buy-low target who should eventually see an uptick in touchdowns.

Jeremiyah Love, Arizona Cardinals

Jeremiyah Love is another buy-low target because his TD production has fallen well short of his overall workload with the Arizona Cardinals.

Love has 76 carries and 11 receptions through six games, but he has scored only two total touchdowns despite handling 14 red-zone carries. His 87 touches give him a solid workload foundation, and his 51% share of Arizona's carries hints that the team wants to feed him when he’s healthy.

That “when he’s healthy” is the biggest concern as he exited early once again last week due to an ankle injury, this time to his other ankle.

But if he can get right, Love has enough volume and red-zone opportunity for his fantasy value to rebound quickly. He could be a league-winner down the stretch.

Jadarian Price, Seattle Seahawks

Jadarian Price is the most speculative buy-low option of the group, but his Week 8 workload makes him worth pursuing.

The Seattle Seahawks have given Price 38 carries and 11 targets across his first four appearances, including 10 carries and four targets in his return from injured reserve Monday night. He led the team’s RBs in snap rate at 48%. That Week 8 workload is particularly important because Zach Charbonnet also played, so — at a minimum — Price looks like he’s going to be a vital piece for the Seahawks.

He has yet to score a touchdown despite receiving opportunities in the offense, leaving room for positive touchdown regression if his role continues to grow.

With Price back in the rotation and Seattle's backfield still offering significant fantasy upside, he is a player worth acquiring before a larger workload translates into more consistent production.

Fantasy Football Buy-Low Running Backs FAQ

What does buy low mean in fantasy football?

Buying low means trading for a player whose perceived fantasy value is lower than his expected value going forward. This can happen because of a slow start, difficult matchups, injuries, or concerns about workload.

When is the best time to buy low on a running back?

The best opportunities often come after a running back has produced a few disappointing fantasy performances but still has an encouraging role. Usage, carries, targets, snap rate, and goal-line opportunities can be more important than the player's recent fantasy-point totals.

What should you look for in a buy-low running back?

Look for backs with strong workloads who haven't converted their opportunities into fantasy production. Receiving usage, red-zone touches, offensive-line play, upcoming schedule, and potential changes to the backfield can also help identify undervalued players.

Should you trade for a running back who is losing touches?

It depends on why his workload is declining. A temporary reduction caused by game script or injury may create a buying opportunity, but a permanent shift toward a committee can significantly lower a running back's fantasy ceiling.
