Fantasy Football: 3 Defenses to Stream for NFL Week 9

Defenses to Stream at a Glance
- Kansas City Chiefs D/ST
- Green Bay Packers D/ST
- Detroit Lions D/ST
Every point matters when it comes to winning in season-long fantasy football, meaning you can't afford to leave points on the table. While we don't spend top-notch draft capital on D/STs in our fantasy football drafts, ignoring them during the season can cost you dearly.
Streaming defenses throughout the year is a great way to ensure you get the most out of your D/ST slot. Even the best defenses draw tough weekly matchups, and even the worst defenses are capable of strong fantasy outings in the right situations.
This article is here to help you parse through all of those situations and to present you with three streamers that are available in most leagues.

D/ST Streamers for Fantasy Football Week 9
Kansas City Chiefs D/ST

Total Points
The Kansas City Chiefs D/ST is rostered in just 44% of ESPN leagues and gets one of the best streaming matchups of the week against the New York Jets.
New York has struggled to protect the quarterback and has been one of the easier offenses to attack for opposing defenses. Kansas City also has a strong pass rush capable of creating sacks and negative plays, giving this unit multiple paths to fantasy production. Also, KC’s offense should light up the Jets’ D, forcing Geno Smith into a lot of drop backs, which creates chances for picks and acks.
The Chiefs are a top-10 consensus defense for Week 9 despite their modest roster rate, making them one of the best pickups available.
Green Bay Packers D/ST
Matchup: at NE

After KC, the streaming options get thin really quickly. The Green Bay Packers are rostered in only 30% of leagues and have a decent road matchup with the New England Patriots.
Green Bay's defense has generated pressure consistently this season, and the Patriots' offense has shown vulnerability when opponents can disrupt the pocket. The Packers also have enough talent in the secondary to turn pressure into turnovers, which gives them upside beyond simply limiting points.
Drake Maye has taken five sacks across the last two games and has eight picks in eight games this year. He’s no stranger to negative plays, and that makes Green Bay a viable D/ST option in Week 9.
Detroit Lions D/ST
Matchup: at MIA

The Detroit Lions are not good defensively, but their Week 9 matchup is pretty nice.
Detroit travels to face the Miami Dolphins, whose offense has been inconsistent and presents opportunities for sacks and turnovers. The Lions' defensive front can create pressure without needing to blitz heavily, which should help them keep Malik Willis in the pocket.
Plus, the Lions’ D is coming off a strong showing in Week 8 where they held the Minnesota Vikings to 15 points.
Fantasy Football Defense Streaming FAQ
What does streaming defenses mean in fantasy football?
Streaming defenses means changing your starting D/ST based on weekly matchups rather than relying on one defense for the entire season. The goal is to target defenses facing offenses that allow sacks, commit turnovers, and/or struggle to score.
What should I look for when streaming a fantasy defense?
Matchup quality is usually the biggest factor. Look for defenses facing inexperienced — or backup — quarterbacks, weak offensive lines, turnover-prone QBs, or teams with low projected point totals.
How early should I pick up a streaming defense?
It can be helpful to look ahead one or two weeks, especially in competitive leagues. Adding a favorable defense before waivers run can keep you from competing with several other managers for the same option. With that said, depending on how many bench spots you have, you likely will want to roster just one defense each week rather than dedicate two roster spots to D/STs.
Is it better to stream defenses or draft an elite D/ST?
Streaming can be a strong strategy because defensive fantasy production is often matchup-dependent. Rather than spending an early pick on a defense, managers can wait until late in the draft to take a D/ST and rotate options throughout the season.
