Saturday’s College Football Picks and Predictions
Nebraska +7.5 (-110)
Indiana at Nebraska, noon ET
Spread
The Indiana Hoosiers have been one of the nation's most impressive teams this season, but Saturday's trip to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers could prove challenging.
The Hoosiers enter the matchup averaging 44.2 points per game while allowing just 10.8 points per contest, the seventh-best mark nationally.
However, Nebraska has been nearly as impressive on both sides of the ball. The Cornhuskers are averaging 43.6 points per game, ranking eighth nationally, while surrendering just 14.2 points per outing.
Those numbers suggest Nebraska has the offensive firepower to keep pace with Indiana, particularly with the benefit of playing at home.
There's also an interesting difference in how these teams have performed relative to betting expectations. Indiana is just 1-4 against the spread this season while Nebraska has covered in four of its five games.
While Indiana deserves to be favored, asking the Hoosiers to win by more than a touchdown on the road against a Nebraska team with this kind of offensive production feels like a tall order.
I'll take the Cornhuskers to cover.
UCLA-Oregon Over 58.5 (-110)
UCLA at Oregon, 3:30 p.m. ET
Total Points
Two explosive Big Ten offenses will square off Saturday when the No. 21 UCLA Bruins visit the No. 13 Oregon Ducks.
The Ducks enter this contest averaging 47.5 points per game while the Bruins aren't far behind at 44.8 points per outing.
Both teams have also been involved in plenty of high-scoring games. All four of Oregon's games have gone over the total this season, and three of UCLA's four contests have surpassed their respective totals.
Defensively, Oregon has been more vulnerable than its lofty ranking might suggest. The Ducks are surrendering 23.3 points per game, ranking 47th nationally. That could provide UCLA with opportunities to move the ball and contribute to a high-scoring affair.
Oregon's offense — even with Dante Moore likely out — should also have opportunities to produce against a UCLA defense allowing 18.8 points per game. Backup QB Dylan Raiola played very well in relief duty the last time we saw the Ducks
With both offenses averaging more than 44 points per contest and Oregon's defense showing some vulnerability, this matchup has the ingredients for a shootout.
Alabama Moneyline (-118)
Georgia at Alabama, 7:30 p.m. ET
Moneyline
Saturday's marquee matchup features the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs visiting the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide in a battle of unbeaten SEC heavyweights.
I'm siding with the Crimson Tide at home.
Alabama has been an offensive juggernaut this season, averaging 49.6 points per game, the second-highest mark in the country. The Tide are coming off a 56-point explosion against Mississippi State, and quarterback Keelon Russell has emerged as one of college football's most dangerous playmakers.
Russell has thrown for 1,414 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding 184 rushing yards and four scores. His dual-threat ability gives Alabama multiple ways to attack Georgia's defense.
The Bulldogs have been equally impressive offensively, averaging a nation-leading 51.4 points per game. However, their defense ranks just 69th nationally in EPA per pass, which could be problematic against Russell and Alabama's explosive passing attack.
Alabama ranks ninth nationally in EPA per pass and second in net adjusted EPA per play, giving the Crimson Tide an encouraging statistical profile heading into this showdown.
With Alabama owning home-field advantage and Russell playing at an extremely high level, I'll back the Crimson Tide to win outright.
