College Basketball Betting: 2023 Battle 4 Atlantis Preview

Subscribe to our newsletter

The Battle 4 Atlantis does not have a rich history like other early-season college basketball tournaments, such as the Maui Invitational. But since the inaugural tournament in 2011, the Battle 4 Atlantis has quickly become a staple for ESPN's Feast Week -- the exciting slate of games featured during the week of Thanksgiving.

This tournament follows the typical format with eight teams participating. Just like the Maui Invite, the Battle 4 Atlantis takes place in a tropical setting, hosted by the Atlantis Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.

Since 2016, Baylor, Villanova, Virginia, Michigan, and Tennessee have won the tournament. Another notable squad will likely win the 2023 Battle 4 Atlantis as the tournament features a promising group of teams.

With the games tipping off on November 22, let's dig into FanDuel Sportsbook's college basketball odds for the tournament, paired with the bracket and breakdown of potential contenders.

UNC Is the Betting Favorite

Only one blue blood has won the Battle 4 Atlantis -- Duke in 2012. The North Carolina Tar Heels (+300), Duke's fierce rivals, are the betting favorite for 2023's edition of the tournament.

After returning four starters ahead of the 2022-23 season, North Carolina returns only 38.1% of their minutes for this year, per Bart Torvik. Armando Bacot -- the program's all-time rebounding leader -- and R.J. Davis are the leaders of the group.

The Tar Heels also replaced experience by adding Cormac Ryan and Harrison Ingram in the transfer portal. Five-star true freshman Elliot Cadeau also has excellent potential as a reserve point guard behind Davis.

This is a blue blood; UNC featuring a talented roster is nothing new. We know Bacot and Davis are exceptional players. It feels like they have been at the collegiate level for 10 years. This kind of experience will be a huge help in the early season. Even if other teams in the field may have a higher ceiling -- such as Arkansas and Villanova -- the Tar Heels' experience could give them the upper hand.

Even the transfers have loads of experience. Paxson Wojcik and Ryan are seniors, and Ingram recorded 62 starts at Stanford across the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

North Carolina will likely lean on its offense, one rated as KenPom's 15th-best unit.

Arkansas, Villanova Not Far Behind

As previously mentioned, one could argue that Arkansas and/or Villanova could end up being better teams than UNC. Either squad is certainly capable of tapping into that potential in the Bahamas and claiming the Battle 4 Atlantis.

By the betting odds, the Razorbacks (+370) and Wildcats (+420) are not far behind the favored Tar Heels. Arkansas, in particular, stands out as an intriguing bet. Why do I say that?

I believe this roster is flying under the radar. No, Arkansas does not have a flashy depth chart full of returning starters or five-star freshmen. However, coach Eric Musselman crushed it in the transfer portal.

He landed two top-25 transfers in Khalif Battle and Tramon Mark. Battle led Temple in scoring last season at 17.9 points per game (PPG), and Mark averaged 10.1 PPG in his last two seasons at Houston. The Razorbacks also added El Ellis, who averaged 17.7 PPG at Louisville last season, and Jeremiah Davenport -- a double-digit scorer in the last two seasons.

Additionally, Arkansas returns key players in Trevon Brazile and Davonte Davis. The Razorbacks do not have household names, but this is a roster beaming with potential. In fact, they are 11th by KenPom and rank within the top 16 in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency.

Villanova is another team that features a heavy dose of transfers. Tyler Burton was the 10th-best transfer available -- per 247 -- after averaging 19.0 PPG at Richmond. The Wildcats also landed Lance Ware, Hakim Hart, and T.J. Bamba.

Eric Dixon and Justin Moore are returning starters, rounding out the roster. Moore could be one of the best wings in America.

North Carolina, Arkansas, and Villanova look like the clear top three options to win the tournament. With the Razorbacks' enticing upside, they could be the best bet to win the Battle 4 Atlantis at +370.

Memphis, Texas Tech Solid Sleeper Options

The minimal separation continues with the teams who own the fourth- and fifth-shortest odds -- Memphis (+500) and Texas Tech (+600).

Memphis features pretty much an entirely new roster with only 14.9% of their minutes back, and Texas Tech is also replacing plenty with just 34.7% of their minutes returned. So how could either team be in contention for the Battle 4 Atlantis?

The Red Raiders return Big 12 All-Freshman guard Pop Isaacs (11.5 PPG in the 2022-23 season), and they added Joe Toussaint, Darrion Williams, Devan Cambridge, and Warren Washington in the transfer portal. According to Bart Torvik's projections, Texas Tech ranks 41st overall with the 30th-best unit in adjusted defensive efficiency.

If you thought the previously mentioned teams added a lot through the transfer portal, prepare yourself. Memphis landed a loaded transfer class led by Jahvon Quinerly (8.7 PPG last season), Jordan Brown (19.3 PPG last season), David Jones, Jaykwon Walton, and Caleb Mills.

Malcolm Dandridge and Jayden Hardaway are the only notable returning contributors, and both will likely be reserves this season.

The Tigers also boast some decent placements in Bart Torvik's projections: 34th overall, 30th in adjusted offensive efficiency, and 37th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Overall, Texas Tech and Memphis will be wild cards for this tournament. Both teams underwent massive roster changes, so they could need time to find their footing. With that said, both rosters have intriguing potential.

Others

Stanford (+900), Michigan(+1200), and Northern Iowa (+4000) round out the field. Northern Iowa as the last choice is not a surprise; they rank 97th in KenPom and are the only mid-major team to participate in this year's Battle 4 Atlantis.

The Cardinal could be a slight threat as they return three of their top four scorers from last season -- Spencer Jones, Michael Jones, and Brandon Angel.

Michigan's long odds are a bit surprising. The Wolverines are not that far behind the top of the field in KenPom (45th), yet their betting odds are much higher than Texas Tech's and Memphis'. Perhaps this suggests Michigan could deal with early struggles as they return only two starters. The Wolverines are another team relying on transfers (Olivier Nkamhoua, Nimari Burnett, and Tray Jackson).

As you have probably sensed at this point, the Battle 4 Atlantis has a running theme of teams that heavily utilized the transfer portal. This could lead to plenty of surprises in the tournament since most of the squads will likely be battling through growing pains.
