Strikeout Props

Brandon Pfaadt Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+100)

Brandon Pfaadt has shown a high strikeout upside in his young career and could be worth a look in today's K market.

He enters the night with a 3.06 xERA, 3.55 SIERA, and 23.4% K%. Pfaadt has punched out over 5.5 batters in 7 out of 13 starts, missing by the hook on two occasions.

This is his second year in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Since introducing his sinker early last season, he has punched out over 5.5 batters in 53.8% of contests (14 out of 26 starts) and at least 5 batters in 73.1% of those outings.

These even-money odds show value and a matchup against the Los Angeles Angels should help his case.

Los Angeles comes in with the ninth-worst wOBA, sixth-worst walk rate, and sixth-worst wRC+ versus right-handed pitchers. They're also striking out against this handedness at a decent 23.4% rate (13th-highest).

This season, Pfaadt has faced seven teams that rank in the top 15 in strikeout rate against righties. In this split, he is averaging 6.7 Ks and recorded at least 6 strikeouts in five out of seven games.

Luis Medina Under 4.5 Strikeouts (+110)

The Oakland Athletics will send out a fairly green pitcher in Luis Medina, and it's easy to be inspired by these +110 odds.

Medina started 17 games for Oakland last season and has made two straight starts this year since returning from the IL. In his starting career, he owns a modest 19.4% K% and punches out just 7.87 batters per nine innings.

He has recorded under 4.5 strikeouts in 11 out of 19 starts (57.9%) while these +110 odds imply only a 47.6% probability.

Medina will throw opposite the Minnesota Twins. Minnesota comes in with a respectable .310 wOBA (10th), 102 wRC+ (tied for 9th), and .394 SLG (10th) against right-handed pitchers, so this matchup will not be a cakewalk for Medina.

The Twins are also generating a middle-of-the-road 22.9% K% (15th) versus righties. That rate has plummeted to 20.6% (21st) in the last month of play.

numberFire's projections concur with the under, expecting Medina to record only 3.96 Ks in this one.

Justin Steele Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-130)

Justin Steele is in for a friendly matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, so let's look for him to find success tonight.

Steele comes in with a 22.9% K% and has notched at least six strikeouts in half of his starts. Dating back to last season, he has punched out over 5.5 batters in 57.9% of his starts, so I'm fine with these -130 odds, which imply a 56.5% probability.

The Rays rank 17th in slugging percentage, 18th in weighted on-base average, and 22nd in walk rate against left-handed pitchers. They're striking out against this handedness at a gaudy 25.4% rate, good for the fourth-highest clip in MLB.

Steele got injured in his first start of the season and was subsequently placed on the IL. His return was met with a pitch limit, but he's been a full-go in his last five starts. In this span, he is averaging 6.4 strikeouts on 92.4 pitches, recording a minimum of 5 Ks.
