2026 Travers Contenders: 3 Best Bets to Win

Key Takeaways:

  • The Travers brings together the winners of all three Triple Crown races with several proven graded-stakes runners, making it a deep test of the three-year-old division at 1 ¼ miles.
  • With limited early speed in the field, the pace could favor horses that can stay reasonably tactical rather than relying entirely on a strong late setup.
  • Renegade gets another race under his belt after the Belmont, has already shown he can win without much pace to chase, and his Saratoga form makes him a serious threat to turn the tables.
  • Golden Tempo remains the horse to beat after winning the Kentucky Derby and Belmont, and his ability to win the Belmont over this same course and distance despite a modest pace eases some of the concerns about Saturday’s setup.
  • Silent Tactic showed encouraging tactical speed in the Jim Dandy, and another step forward second off the layoff could make him dangerous at 10-1.

The Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes is the feature race of the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course. Open to three-year-olds, the race covers the American classic distance of 1 ¼ miles on the dirt. The race is called the Midsummer Derby for good reason: it always brings in the top of the sophomore class, including Triple Crown alumni as well as improving horses ready to make an impact in the second half of the season.

The history of the Travers is long and grand. The race was first run in 1864, making it one of the oldest events in not only American racing, but American sports as a whole. From the superstar filly Ruthless, to arguably the greatest Travers winner ever Man o’ War, to 100-1 upsetter Jim Dandy, Triple Crown winner Whirlaway, the hard-fighting Alydar, Arrogate and his track-record time, last year’s Horse of the Year and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty – all these horses aren’t just part of horse racing history, they have all won this piece of horse racing history.

The 2026 Travers drew a competitive field of 10. The winners of all three Triple Crown races are in the starting gate: Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo makes his first start since winning the Belmont as well, and Preakness winner Napoleon Solo will try to avenge his Haskell (G1) defeat to Baby Vino. Baby Vino is, of course, in the Travers as well. So is Jim Dandy (G2) winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Renegade, trying to turn the tables on Golden Tempo. Curlin Stakes winner Sea Strike, trained by Chad Brown, also adds intrigue as he tries graded company for the first time.

2026 Travers Day Card

The Travers is carded as the 13th race of Saratoga’s blockbuster 14-race Saturday card. Travers Day also features five other graded stakes on the card: the Forego (G1) for older sprinters, the Ballerina (G1) for filly and mare sprinters, the Personal Ensign (G1) for older filly and mare dirt routers, the H. Allen Jerkens (G1) for sophomore sprinters, and the Lake Placid (G2) for sophomore turf mile fillies. The card gets underway at 11:05 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, with the Travers set for 6:35 p.m. EDT.

3 Best Picks for Travers Stakes 2026

These are the three best bets for the Travers Stakes:

1. Renegade (2026 Travers Stakes odds: 3-1)

Golden Tempo beat Renegade on the square in the Belmont Stakes, but their paths have diverged since then: Renegade made his date in the Jim Dandy, while Golden Tempo missed it. It’s not a bad sign that Golden Tempo still returned to the work tab reasonably soon, and in good time to prepare for this, but between two top-class horses in a top-class spot, luck matters. And, the best kind of luck is…making the races a trainer has mapped out.

The pace in the Travers doesn’t stand to be extremely fast, but despite the fact that Renegade comes from off the pace in his races, he is less pace-dependent than a lot of late runners. He didn’t get much to run at in the Arkansas Derby (G1), and he won that impressively. He got even less in the Jim Dandy, and it didn’t stop him there, either. He’s proven at Saratoga, as well. The one thing he really has to prove against Golden Tempo is the desire to go 1 ¼ miles – but with another race underneath him and plenty of distance breeding, it’s going to be worth it to trust the idea that, in the Kentucky Derby, he likely would have beaten Golden Tempo if he hadn’t had the rough rail-draw trip.

2. Golden Tempo (2026 Travers Stakes odds: 5-2)

There probably won’t be a clear favorite in the Travers: on the board it’s a narrow choice between Renegade and Golden Tempo. And, the bettors will probably have it right. Though the field of the Travers drew very good, it also looks formful in the sense that between Saratoga form and distance form, the two best horses do look like the ones who deserve the longest look. And, even with a missed date in the Jim Dandy, there’s still a lot of reason that Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Golden Tempo will look like the Golden Tempo we got to know in the Triple Crown season.

With the missed start, if Golden Tempo didn’t return to the work tab until a few weeks out from the Travers, that would have been a red flag. But, he’s been back since mid-July and working steadily since, building confidence that he’ll be ready. There’s also a concern about pace, since Golden Tempo is a closer and there isn’t a bumper crop of early speed to rally into. That was a concern based on his Fair Grounds form. However, when he won the Belmont, he didn’t get a particularly fast pace to close into, and that happened over the same course and distance as the Travers will be run over. He’s a rare thing in American racing: a true 1 ¼-mile horse. And, with jockey Jose Ortiz aboard, he should have the best possible chance in the situation, both because Ortiz has such great rapport with Golden Tempo and because Ortiz has been riding so well all season long.

3. Silent Tactic (2026 Travers Stakes odds: 10-1)

Among the longer shots in the Travers, Silent Tactic should hit the board and is the one with the best chance to upset on the win end. He had that problem of missing races earlier in the year, of course – he was scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to a foot bruise, and ended up missing the entire Triple Crown because of it. However, trainer Mark Casse got him right in time for the Jim Dandy, and he ran a solid effort for third. He showed more pace than he ever have, perhaps because of a jockey change to Luis Saez, and though he got run down by Renegade and Commandment, it was a positive sign that he had actually moved forward despite missing the Triple Crown season.

Saez returns to the irons for the Travers, a positive since he should be able to give him a tactical trip in a race without a lot of speed drawn in. The 1 ¼ miles is a question since, unlike the horses who made the Triple Crown series, he hasn’t tried it yet. However, being by Tacitus out of a Gun Runner mare with some distance in the female family, it’s a pedigree more worth trying at 1 ¼ miles than most American pedigrees. He’s already not outclassed against these, and if he moves forward second off the layoff, he could become the next chapter of Saratoga’s long history as the graveyard of favorites.
