WNBA Championship Odds Update: Aces Still Favorites Heading Into the Playoffs
The WNBA regular season has come to an end, and the playoffs are set to begin on Wednesday night.
It's looked like a two-way race -- as expected -- for much of the season, but when the playoffs come around, anything is possible.
With the playoffs set to begin, here's a look at the WNBA Championship odds, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
WNBA Championship Odds
Las Vegas Aces (-145)
The Las Vegas Aces have been the cream of the crop in the WNBA for well over a year now after winning the 2022 WNBA Championship. It shouldn't be much of a shock that they are the 2023 favorites.
What is worth noting is that the Aces lost as many games in the final quarter of the season (three) as they did in the first three quarters -- but they had a playoff spot locked in for all of that final stretch, which could have been a factor.
Las Vegas will lean on their stars as they have all season, with reigning MVP A'ja Wilson leading the way and the all-timer guard trio of Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray continuing to dominate.
The foot injury to Candace Parker is a concern as she hasn't played since July 7th after having to get surgery. There's been no timetable for a return, meaning they'll likely have to move forward without her, possibly for the duration of the postseason. However, they won a title without Parker last year, and there's a reason Vegas is -145 to win it all.
They have the track record, but unlike last year, they have a nearly-equal opposing force that is likely to meet them in the championship. For now, the Aces are the top team heading into the playoffs because of what they've done this season and last. Until someone takes them down, Vegas is the team to beat.
New York Liberty (+145)
If there's going to be a first-time winner this year in the WNBA, look no further than the New York Liberty to be the team to do so.
They stocked up in the offseason by adding former MVPs Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones as well as five-time All-Star Courtney Vandersloot to pair with Sabrina Ionescu. Well, it has worked out pretty well.
The Liberty finished the season with a 32-8 record -- the second-best mark in the league -- and earned themselves a Commissioner's Cup win earlier in the year over the Aces. That victory is a feather in New York's cap and had to serve as a confidence booster.
New York did have a better second half than Vegas did, going 17-3, compared to the Aces' 16-4 record -- so that's another box checked for the Liberty.
It is highly likely that we get an Aces-Liberty title matchup, with the odds at odds at -210 for those two to meet in the finals. If you think these two teams are close to even, betting on New York is the route to take.
Connecticut Sun (+1900)
The Connecticut Sun are long shots -- and understandably so -- heading into the playoffs.
Connecticut has easily been the third-best team in the league all season, and they'd likely be in the conversation with New York and Las Vegas if it wasn't for the Achilles injury to Brionna Jones, which has forced her to miss the majority of the campaign.
In the meantime, Alyssa Thomas has been sensational for the Sun -- averaging 15.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 7.9 assists. She paced the league in boards and was second in assists. Her performance this year may have flown under the radar for many when it comes to the MVP conversation, as both Stewart and Wilson have dominated the headlines, but Thomas certainly deserves respect for her outstanding campaign.
Connecticut has made it to two of the last four WNBA Finals, so they know how to get there. But at the end of the day, they're a tier below the Liberty and Aces, and that's reflected in their +1900 odds.
