WNBA Best Bets
Connecticut Sun at Washington Mystics
Sun -10.5 (-110)
The Connecticut Sun are big-time favorites heading into tonight's game against the Washington Mystics -- and understandably so. With how great the Sun have been on defense this season, I like them to cover at -10.5 (-110).
For much of the season, the Mystics have struggled on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. There's a reason their record sits at 4-13, although they have won four of their last five games.
Unfortunately for the Mystics, their injury-filled season took another hit on Wednesday when it was revealed that Karlie Samuelson will be out with a broken finger -- joining Brittney Sykes, who will now be out until the Olympic break. Shakira Austin will also be sidelines tonight's game, setting up the Sun to have a full advantage.
Connecticut is holding their opponents to a league-low 71.7 points per game -- which should continue against a Mystics team that is averaging just 78.4 points per game so far this season.
The Sun haven't been a big scorers in their own right, averaging just 79.3 points per game. With Washington allowing 81.9 points to their opponents, there's enough here on each side to believe that this will be a game where the Sun dominate -- especially with all the injuries for the Mystics.
Alyssa Thomas had been day-to-day, but assuming she will be good to go tonight, give me the Sun to cover.
Indiana Fever at Seattle Storm
Storm -9.5 (-110)
Speaking of the top teams in the WNBA, the Seattle Storm are at home tonight against the Indiana Fever, and I like the Storm's chances of getting a win -- so much so that I believe they can cover at -9.5 (-110) as they come off a big 11-point win over the aforementioned Sun.
The Storm are averaging the fourth-most points per game in the WNBA at an 82.4 clip. They're also holding the opposition to just 78.6 points per game -- which is also the fourth-best mark in the league.
This comes against a Fever team that scores a respectable amount of points, entering the evening with 80.9 per game. And prior to their heartbreaking loss against the Chicago Sky on Sunday, they had won four straight games and looked to be finding momentum. That likely ended Sunday and should roll over to tonight with how poor they are on defense.
Indiana has struggled all season defensively, allowing the most points in the league to their opponents on a points-per-game basis (87.9).
Angel Reese scored a career-high 25 points against the Fever and their suspect defense on Sunday -- showing that the absence of Temi Fagbenle is being seriously felt in the middle. Fagbenle is questionable for the game, but even if she does play, she will be on a minutes restriction. That shouldn't be able to slow down Nneka Ogwumike -- who has averaged 17.7 points per game this season. This will be a big night for her.
Seattle has shown that they are an elite team, one that will be in the conversation as a contender when the playoffs come around. The Fever, on the other hand, are not at the level of the Storm right now.
With Seattle being on their home court, this is a night for the Storm to take care of business.
