WNBA Best Bets
Los Angeles Sparks at New York Liberty
Sparks +15.0 (-110)
Over 165.5 (-110)
The Los Angeles Sparks continue their East Coast road trip tonight when they take on the New York Liberty. Though they dropped their most recent game, 79-70, to the Connecticut Sun, it was impressive to see LA compete with the top team in the league.
They battled the Sun on the glass and managed to shoot 50% from the floor against the W's best defense. That bodes well for them tonight, especially since they played the final three quarters without Cameron Brink.
Brink will be out for the foreseeable future, and that's something we need to account for going forward. The No. 2 overall pick in April's draft had averaged 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks across 22 minutes per game this season.
But the Sparks quietly averaged nearly seven more points per 100 possessions with Brink off the floor this season, per PBP Stats. On the flip side, their defense took a hit when she sat.
That's probably not an ideal tradeoff when you're up against the top-rated offense in the W, though it does lend itself to the over.
The Liberty also have a top-four defense, but that doesn't mean they don't give up points. As the fifth-fastest team in pace, New York dips to third in scoring defense, allowing 77.9 points per game.
The Sparks have averaged 77.8 points per game against teams in the top half of the league in pace -- up slightly on their season average. Considering Brink was just fifth on the team in usage rate, I'm not expecting a huge fall-off on the offensive end.
Defense could be an issue considering the Liberty have the league's top true shooting percentage (56.8%) and third-highest assist-to-turnover ratio (1.51).
They've been even better at home, boasting a 108.7 offensive rating. That's led to five of their seven home games going over, according to numberFire's database.
But they've also covered in only one of their seven home games. The Liberty have just three wins by 15+ points this season, and two of those came against the Indiana Fever early on.
With that, I like the Sparks to at least keep things respectable tonight and cover as 15-point underdogs. But points should be plentiful, so we'll tack on over 165.5 points, as well.
Both lines are available at -110 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. If you combine them in a Same Game Parlay, the odds jump to +261, as of Thursday afternoon.
