WNBA Best Bets

New York Liberty at Chicago Sky

Under 166.5 (-110)

The New York Liberty (19-4) and Chicago Sky (9-13) met up last night, with the former grabbing a 91-76 victory.

These teams went a combined 17-for-33 from the three-point line (51.5% 3P%) on Thursday. New York also made 18 free throws.

On the season, the Liberty own a 34.7% 3P%, and Chicago shoots threes at a 30.7% clip. New York averages 13.8 free-throw makes per game.

A super-hot shooting night from both sides and some extra freebies at the charity stripe still resulted in just a 167-point game total.

That's because both teams play at a pretty tepid pace, with the Sky ranking fifth and the Liberty ranking eighth in tempo. We're also talking about two of the top five defenses in the league, so possessions get drawn out.

When these teams run it back tomorrow afternoon, we should expect a similar game environment and tempo but a come-back-down-to-earth day from behind the arc. Chicago and New York average the third- and fourth-fewest turnovers and, more or less, are pretty good at running their offensive sets to fruition, especially New York.

I think the market may be off in setting Saturday's game total as an exact reflection of how last night's 167-point game went. I'm not interested in relying on another showcase from downtown, so I'll be siding with the under.

Los Angeles Sparks at Dallas Wings

Sparks +2.5 (-110)

The Los Angeles Sparks (5-17) will visit the Dallas Wings (5-18) on Saturday afternoon. It's hard to speak highly of either of these squads, who rank last in the WNBA standings, but the Sparks are the more talented group.

On the season, Los Angeles has a -8.2 net rating (third-worst) while Dallas owns a -10.6 net rating (worst).

Maddy Siegrist sustained a broken finger in mid-June and remains out for the Wings. Siegrist was contributing 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. She also led the team in net rating and defensive win shares.

Dallas hasn't been holding it down sans Siegrist. They struggle with a 2-8 record and an abysmal -16.2 net rating in her absence. They're also letting up an eye-popping 94.2 points per game in this span.

Both teams have a top-10 scorer in Arike Ogunbowale and Dearica Hamby, but the latter is more reliable for offensive efficiency. Hamby will also draw the easier matchup inside.

These teams have met up twice this season. Dallas took the first game 84-83, and the Sparks took the second battle 81-72.

The Wings cede the second-most fast break points and the most points off of turnovers, which could lend itself to LA's guards finding their scoring spots at a higher rate than normal.
