WNBA Best Bets

Chicago Sky at New York Liberty

Liberty -10.0 (-110)

After each picked up wins during yesterday's five-game WNBA slate, the Chicago Sky (9-12) and New York Liberty (18-4) will meet up tonight.

There's plenty to like about Chicago, and they appear to be trending upward after going 5-3 across their last eight games, but a road matchup against arguably the best team in the league is a brutal draw for this rare back-to-back contest.

New York owns a +11.2 net rating (best) and has the best record in the WNBA. The Sky are 2-7 against the top five teams in the league, struggling with a -57 point differential in this split.

Chicago's -1.2 net rating ranks sixth in the league. They're great at getting to the foul line, and they net the most paint points per game in the league.

However, New York's interior defense, led by Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, should prove limiting against Chicago's rookies, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. The Liberty cede the third-fewest paint points and fewest free throws, not to mention the third-fewest offensive boards per game.

They'll have an answer for Reese, who is looking to secure her 15th consecutive double-double in this one.

Both teams are due for regression, albeit in the opposite directions. The Sky have shot at an above-average clip from the field in three of their last four games. The Liberty, meanwhile, have shot below 24.0% from the three-point line in three straight games. We're talking about a team that shoots a league-high 29.8 three-point attempts (3PA) and has legit shooters at every position, so it's only a matter of time before they start to pummel teams from behind the arc.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton missed yesterday's game for New York due to knee inflammation, though her absence was precautionary given the back-to-back, and she is expected to play tonight.

The Liberty are 10-1 on their home floor and are winning home games by an average margin of 11.5 points. I think they'll be too much for the Sky, especially if they see some shooting regression from downtown, so I'll back them as the 10.0-point favorites after they opened on FanDuel Sportsbook as 11.5-point favorites.

Jonquel Jones Over 23.5 Pts + Reb (-114)

Jones is averaging 24.6 combined points and rebounds (PR) and has exceeded 23.5 PR in 14 out of 22 games (63.6% of contests).

Last season, Jones cleared 23.5 PR in 60.9% of games where she played at least 24 minutes. Since she is playing 31.0 minutes per contest this season, and these -114 odds imply just a 53.4% probability, there is value in siding with the over.

Jones has corralled at least 11 boards in six of her last seven games and should put up a good fight with Reese, who is skilled at grabbing her own rebound.

Notably, Jones is averaging 10.9 FGA in New York victories but just 5.8 FGA in their losses. They don't fare well when Jones is not involved on the offensive end, and I expect her to feast against a Sky team that surrenders the third-most paint points in the league.

Jonquel Jones To Record A Double-Double (+135) is worth a look, too.

Marina Mabrey Over 8.5 Reb + Ast (+100)

Marina Mabrey has taken on a reduced scoring role ever since Chennedy Carter entered the starting lineup, but Chicago's starting guard is still making her presence known elsewhere on the stat sheet.

Mabrey is averaging 9.3 combined rebounds and assists (RA) and a team-leading 32.7 minutes per game. She's notched over 8.5 RA in 57.1% of games (12 out of 21 contests).

When facing the top five teams in the league, Mabrey is averaging 9.9 RA and cleared 8.5 RA in seven out of nine games. This includes 11 RA and 13 RA in two games against the Liberty this year. This game features a decent 166.5 over/under, so I like Mabrey in this spot.
