Wimbledon Second Round Betting Picks: Thursday 7/4/24

Perhaps the most revered of the four Grand Slams, Wimbledon is underway this week.

We should see plenty of fun matches and storylines emerge over the fortnight, and what better way to get in on the action than by making some wagers on the Wimbledon Betting Odds at FanDuel Sportsbook?

Let's see which second-round matches could have the most betting value on Thursday.

Wimbledon Best Bets

Hubert Hurkacz vs. Arthur Fils

Hurkacz -4.5 Games (-110)

As of this writing, Hubert Hurkacz has +1800 odds to win Wimbledon, which might not seem like much until you realize those are the tournament's fifth-shortest odds. That might be a far cry from the top contenders, but it goes to show that Hurkacz remains a dark horse threat who's unlikely to go out quietly.

Achieving a career-high ranking as the world No. 7 this past month, Hurkacz comes into the second round with a 34-13 record, which includes going 6-1 on grass and reaching the finals in Halle. While he failed to win the Halle title, losing the championship match to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner 7-6(8), 7-6(2) is nothing to be ashamed of and can actually be viewed as a positive.

Hurkacz was a semifinalist at 2021 Wimbledon, and although he's otherwise had mixed results at the All England Club, two of his five Wimbledon losses have come at the hands of Novak Djokovic and another came against elite grass player Matteo Berrettini. With better draws, it's entirely possible he would have more deep runs under his belt.

If Hurkacz maintains his strong 2024 form, it's hard to see Arthur Fils causing him too much trouble. Fils' first-round victory puts him just one match over .500 for the year (17-16), and the 20-year-old has yet to advance past the second round of a Grand Slam.

Tennis Abstract forecasts an 80% win chance for Hurkacz, and Massey Ratings is also bullish at 82%. We aren't paying a premium for Hurkacz to cover the spread, and he covered this number in the first round even while dropping a set.

Jack Draper vs. Cameron Norrie

Draper -4.5 Games (-120)

The Wimbledon crowd will be treated to a battle of Brits as Jack Draper takes on Cameron Norrie in the second round. However, while Norrie is a former top-10 player and was a semifinalist here in 2022, it's the 22-year-old Draper who's having the better 2024 campaign and could be poised for a breakthrough.

Injuries have prevented Draper from fulfilling his potential since he turned pro in 2018, but things might be finally coming together for him after reaching a career-high ranking (28th) entering the event. He won his first ATP title in June (Stuttgart) and has put together an impressive 8-1 grass record this season.

While Draper faced some adversity in the first round, surviving a five-setter against a significant underdog in Elias Ymer, working through some early-tournament hiccups could help him in the long run.

Meanwhile, Norrie has amassed a mediocre 15-13 record in 2024 and is ranked just 42nd after beginning the campaign inside the top 20. He came into the event having lost four tour-level matches in a row, and he even went just 1-1 at a grass Challenger event last month, with the loss coming to a player ranked outside the top 700.

Although a straight-set win in the first round over Facundo Diaz Acosta could give Norrie a boost, it was Diaz Acosta's third career grass match and first tour-level grass match -- not exactly the toughest opponent.

Tennis Abstract projects Draper to win this match 74% of the time while Massey Ratings is a tick higher at 75%. Recent trends all point to a Draper victory, and he won't need to be perfect to cover this spread.
