Wimbledon First Round Betting Picks: Tuesday 7/2/24

Perhaps the most revered of the four Grand Slams, Wimbledon is underway this week.

We should see plenty of fun matches and storylines emerge over the fortnight, and what better way to get in on the action than by making some wagers on the Wimbledon Betting Odds at FanDuel Sportsbook?

Let's see which first-round matches could have the most betting value on Tuesday.

Wimbledon Best Bets

Taylor Fritz vs. Christopher O'Connell

Fritz 3-0 Sets (-130)

Taylor Fritz lost his standing as the top-ranked American on the ATP Tour to Tommy Paul for all of a week before taking it right back after winning a title at Eastbourne, his second title in 2024 and third overall at Eastbourne.

Now back up to the world No. 12, Fritz will look to build on this season's 6-1 grass record with a deep run at Wimbledon after crashing out in the second round in 2023.

It's safe to say he has the right opponent to get off on the right foot, as Christopher O'Connell comes into this event in shaky form. Not only has O'Connell lost four straight matches, but he retired from his most recent match at the Italian Open in May and hasn't competed ever since, leaving him with zero matches on grass before Wimbledon.

Despite Fritz's poor result here last season, he was a quarterfinalist in 2022 -- barely missing the semifinals in a marathon match against Rafael Nadal -- and his 31-12 record this year runs laps around O'Connell's 9-11 mark. In their lone head-to-head meeting, Fritz won in straight sets at the 2023 Madrid Open.

Massey Ratings is predicting an easy win for the American, projecting a 91% win probability. We aren't paying too much of a premium to back Fritz to win in straight sets, making this an appealing way to side with him in this matchup.

Ajla Tomljanovic vs. Jelena Ostapenko

Ostapenko -3.5 Games (-108)

Many tennis fans are no doubt familiar with the dust-up these two had at 2021 Wimbledon, though Jelena Ostapenko and Ajla Tomljanovic seem to be on much better terms nowadays after facing each other twice over the last three seasons.

But, what's most relevant for our purposes is that Ostapenko won both of the last two meetings (most recently at the 2024 Australian Open) and owns a 3-1 head-to-head record, as her lone loss to Tomljanovic was that Wimbledon encounter.

Additionally, while Tomljanovic is coming off a finals appearance at Birmington, it's been a long road back from injury after missing most of the 2023 season and then being sidelined again shortly after this year's Australian Open. In all, her 2024 record sits at just 11-9, and she hasn't faced even a top-30 opponent since she went against Ostapenko (then ranked 10th) in Australia.

Ostapenko has been inconsistent lately, going just 1-2 in her tune-up grass tournaments, but she did win a doubles title in Eastbourne, so it hasn't been all bad. Overall, the world No. 14 is 24-12 with two singles titles this season.

Massey Ratings is once again very bullish on the favorite, giving Ostapenko a 79% chance of victory. Given their history and where Tomljanokic is in her comeback, we should like the chances of Ostapenko covering this spread.
