After a late withdrawal, UFC veteran Rob Font (20-6, 9 KO) will answer the call by joining Cory Sandhagen (16-4, 7 KO) in the octagon this Saturday night (Aug. 5). As the Main event of UFC on ESPN 50, the two fighters -- headlining a six-bout main card -- have agreed upon a catchweight of 140 pounds.

Saturday's UFC Fight Night event will take place at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee: home of the Nashville Predators. This will be UFC's first promotion in "Music City" since 2019.

Cory Sandhagen

In what was initially scheduled as a bantamweight brawl against Umar Nurmagomedov (younger cousin to retired legend Khabib Nurmagomedov), Sandhagen's original opponent was forced to drop out after sustaining an injury requiring shoulder surgery.

That means Sandhagen will get Rob Font at UFC Nashville on short notice. The two have agreed upon a catchweight of 140 pounds, although Sandhagen -- standing at 5-foot-11 -- is three inches taller than Font.

Sandhagen has strung together back-to-back wins, including four victories in his past six fights. His most recent bout (also a UFC Fight Night Main event) was a tight contest with Marlon Vera last March, which ended via split decision in Sandhagen's favor.

In viral fashion, Sandhagen gained considerable notoriety in 2021 after earning both the Cageside Press and Combat Press 2021 Knockout of the Year -- it was a lightning-quick, short-flying knee to the jaw of Frankie Edgar.

Rob Font

Filling in for the late scratch, Font will be back in the octagon after fighting as recently as UFC 287 (April 2023, the night Izzy Adesanya sent Alex Pereira into a deep dream state).

On that night, Font put together a thrilling show-stopping victory over Adrian Yanez. Utilizing masterful counter-punching abilities, he landed a devastating right hand on Yanez's chin, resulting in a TKO finish. For his efforts, Font -- along with Adesanya -- earned official "Performance of the Night" accolades.

Against Sandhagen, Font will be a moderate underdog (+265 moneyline). As mentioned, Sandhagen is noticeably taller, which is why Font is such a long shot to score another knockout victory (+750). Keep in mind: Font does have one advantage in the tale of the tape. His standing reach is 71.5 inches, which is slightly longer than Sandhagen at 70.

Both men here have fought Marlon Vera within the last 16 months. I alluded to Sanghagen's narrow SD win over Vera, which was Sandhagen's last fight. A year prior, Vera and Font headlined UFC on ESPN 35. It was a respectable scrap, but Vera was ahead on all cards after five full rounds, ultimately earning the win versus Font.

All history aside: UFC Nashville will be a new night, entirely. Font -- even on short notice -- should give Sandhagen a formidable foe.
