Ravens vs. Texans Week 1: Storylines to Follow

  • Ravens
    • A new-look offense under offensive coordinator Todd Monken
      • The Ravens will begin the 2023 season with a new offensive coordinator for the first time since 2019. Following the departure of Greg Roman, Todd Monken was hired to provide a different look on offense than the run-heavy schemes of the past four seasons. To support a more pass-heavy attack, the Ravens signed Odell Beckham in free agency and used their first-round draft pick on wide receiver Zay Flowers. Those two will join wide receiver Rashod Bateman and tight end Mark Andrews to form a pass-catching unit with sky-high potential. When Lamar Jackson takes the field in Week 1, he will be operating an offense with the best pass-catching weapons of his career thus far. A quick start against Houston would be an excellent way to begin the Monken era in Baltimore.
    • Zay Flowers' NFL debut
      • Baltimore selected Flowers with the 22nd overall pick in this year's draft, making him the third wide receiver off the board. In Monken's offense, which is expected to provide more targets for pass-catchers, Flowers will have a chance to make an immediate impact, even on a crowded depth chart. Despite quarterback limitations in college, Flowers caught 78 passes for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns, accounting for more than half of Boston College's receiving touchdowns. It may take time for Flowers to become a major part of the Ravens' offense, but it shouldn't take long for him to flash the skills that made him a first-round draft pick. A Week 1 home matchup against the Texans sets the stage for an exciting debut.
  • Texans
    • C.J. Stroud's NFL debut
      • After an offseason of uncertainty and a smoke-and-mirrors act leading up to the draft, the Texans selected Stroud with the second overall pick in this year's NFL draft. The 2023 campaign is the start of a new era in Houston, with head coach DeMeco Ryans hired to turn things around. Stroud is the foundational piece of a new era for the Texans' offense and will have a large impact on that turnaround. After Davis Mills started 28 games over the last two seasons, Houston finally has a reason to be optimistic about the quarterback position for the first time since Deshaun Watson's last start in 2020. A Week 1 matchup with an elite Ravens defense, one that conceded the third-fewest points (315) in the league last season, could make for a lackluster debut for Stroud, or he could make a big splash in his first career start. Either way, all eyes will be on Stroud in this game as the future of the Texans' franchise takes centerstage for the first time.
    • Will Anderson Jr.'s NFL debut
      • Houston made waves when they traded up to select Anderson with the third overall pick after just nabbing Stroud with the second pick. Anderson is the foundational piece of a new era for the Texans' defense. With Ryans at the helm, Houston's defense will be expected to improve drastically this season after allowing the sixth-most points (420) last year. In three seasons at Alabama, Anderson recorded 34.5 sacks and 58.5 tackles for a loss. He will be instrumental in helping Houston turn around a defense that surrendered the most rushing yards in the league last season (2,894) and the fifth-highest yards per carry (5.0). When Houston's offense is on the field, all eyes will be on Stroud. When their defense is on the field, all eyes will be on Anderson.
