Phillies Analysis
With 90 wins in 2023, the Phillies totaled their most regular-season wins since the 2011 season.
Philadelphia featured a balanced team as the offense had the ninth-best batting average (.256) and ninth-ranked on-base percentage (OBP; .327). The slugging was there, as well, with a .438 slugging percentage (fifth-best) and 220 home runs (eighth-most). The bullpen held similar top-tier stats, with Philly boasting the seventh-best WHIP (1.24) and sixth-best skill interactive earned run average (SIERA; 3.99).
Overall, this past offseason was a pretty uneventful one for the Phillies. It certainly pales in comparison to what some fellow contenders did -- such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, who enter the campaign as the championship favorite, boasting +320 odds to win the World Series. Philadelphia mostly focused on retention and bringing back their key pieces. For example, they re-signed Aaron Nola to a seven-year, $172 million contract. Zack Wheeler also looks to be a priority as the Phillies are in extension talks with the 6-foot-4 righty.
The bullpen took a hit with Craig Kimbrel signing with the Baltimore Orioles. First baseman Rhys Hoskins also departed, joining the Milwaukee Brewers.
Ultimately, Philadelphia should still feature one of the best starting rotations in the league, especially if they manage to add Jordan Montgomery -- who has been heavily linked with Philly throughout the offseason. The batting order still has plenty of pop with the likes of Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Nick Castellanos. Harper has the sixth-shortest NL MVP odds (+1200), and Wheeler has the second-shortest NL Cy Young odds (+850).
This has been an offseason full of "ifs" for Philadelphia. If the Phillies managed to land Yamamoto for instance -- who they pursued heavily, per reports -- we'd probably be talking about Philadelphia in a little different light. Still, the Phillies remain a contender with nearly the same rotation returning and most of their key bats back. This offseason showed that Philly believes they have enough to raise a World Series pennant. The upcoming months will reveal if it was the right call.
