Starting tomorrow, FBS college football is back, and Saturday's Week 0 slate begins with a noon ET rematch between TCU and North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland.

These teams met in Chapel Hill to open last season, and TCU dominated that matchup, 48-14. Both programs enter 2026 with major changes at quarterback and offensive coordinator, creating plenty of uncertainty in the season opener.

TCU vs North Carolina Prediction and Picks

The North Carolina Tar Heels‘ offense was one of the least productive units in the country last season. The Tar Heels averaged just 19.25 points and 289.2 total yards per game, including only 105.2 rushing yards per contest. Their offense also produced just 5.0 yards per play.

New offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino should help, but UNC is asking him to overhaul the unit immediately while also breaking in quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. Edwards appeared in only two games for the Wisconsin Badgers last season, completing 7 of 16 passes for 113 yards.

The TCU Horned Frogs have uncertainty of their own at quarterback after turning to Harvard transfer Jaden Craig, but Craig brings considerably more recent production. He threw for 2,869 yards and 25 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions in 11 games last year while averaging 260.82 passing yards per game.

The Horned Frogs also return running back Jeremy Payne, who averaged 5.7 yards per carry while rushing for 623 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2025. Payne added 207 receiving yards and two more scores.

TCU has the more established offensive pieces, and its advantage in the trenches could be significant against a rebuilt UNC offensive line.

Payne enters the season as TCU's most established offensive weapon after rushing for 623 yards and 5 touchdowns while averaging 5.7 yards per carry in 2025. He also contributed 207 receiving yards and two additional touchdowns, giving the Horned Frogs plenty of reasons to feature him heavily in the opener.

The matchup also points toward a run-heavy approach. As mentioned above, TCU is breaking in Craig at quarterback, and new offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis is expected to lean more heavily on the ground game. With TCU favored by more than a touchdown, the Horned Frogs could also be in position to feed Payne throughout the second half if they control the game.

While North Carolina's defensive front was solid statistically last season, the Tar Heels are dealing with significant turnover elsewhere, and TCU should have an advantage along the offensive line.

Payne's combination of projected workload and efficiency makes this my preferred player prop for Saturday’s opening game.
