NHL Norris Trophy Odds: Quinn Hughes Dominating the Field Early

It's still early, but the 2023-24 NHL season is proving to be an exciting one.

Even with it being just a month into the campaign, many of the top awards are fully up for grabs, and surprise names are surging ahead to become favorites. That can be said about the Norris Trophy race, which has already become an exciting run with plenty of room to go.

Here's a look at the Norris Trophy odds, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

NHL Norris Trophy Odds

Quinn Hughes (+210)

It's hard to have as good a start to the season as Quinn Hughes is having.

The Vancouver Canucks have leaped out to an 11-3-1 record, and their captain has a lot to do with that.

Through 15 games, Hughes has recorded 5 goals, 18 assists, and 23 points -- which ranks fourth in the entire NHL. He's putting up numbers that defensive players rarely do anymore, and it's why we've seen him quickly become the favorite to take home the Norris Trophy this season.

Before the puck dropped in the 2023-24 NHL season, Hughes entered with +1100 odds in the preseason to take home his first Norris Trophy. Those have since surged to +210 and sole possession of the favorite spot -- and it's hard to imagine that'll be changing any time soon.

Along with the 23 points is an average of 24:00 time on ice, 45 shots on net, and being a +18 player so early in the campaign -- incredible numbers across the board. There's no taking away from Hughes' incredible opening to the season. If he can even play to 75% of this level the rest of the way, then the Norris Trophy will be his.

Cale Makar (+300)

If there's anyone who can catch up to Quinn Hughes in this race, it will be preseason favorite Cale Makar.

Makar is much like Connor McDavid in the Hart Trophy market -- it's hard to count him out with more than three-quarters of the season left to go. The Avalanche star has easily been the second-best behind Hughes. Makar has posted 4 goals, 14 assists, and 18 points within 14 games, sporting a plus/minus of +9.

The 25-year-old has finished top-three in the Norris Trophy voting in the last three years, including winning the award in 2021-22. Based on the history of their teams and their careers, Makar should be able to be the one between him and Hughes to keep these numbers up all season long.

It's going to come down to the wire between these two as long as they stay healthy. This very well could be the best odds bettors can get Makar at for the rest of the season.

Longshots

With the theme of the Norris Trophy emphasizing offensive output over the last few years, the longshots for this award will need a lot to go their way.

Rasmus Dahlin (+1000) has been good to kick off the year, putting together 11 points on 3 goals and 8 assists. He's among the top defensemen in the league at 24:21 time on ice but has a plus/minus of -1.

Miro Heiskanen (+1200) is similar to Hughes and Makar -- playing for one of the best teams in the NHL. The 24-year-old defenseman has 1 goal, 10 assists, and 11 points through 15 games with a +1 plus/minus. He has had a fine start but again, things will have to go differently for him to get into the conversation or otherwise lose out.

Adam Fox (+2000) was the only other defenseman in the conversation through the first month but after being injured and placed on the long-term injured reserved list, he's likely to keep falling in odds. The former Norris Trophy winner had 3 goals and 8 assists over 10 games before his injury.

The longshots are longshots for a reason. With Makar and Hughes setting a precedent to reach, it's likely already down to them unless something unexpected changes it.
