NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Wednesday 1/31/24

NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.

Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.

Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.

Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate, find a goalie, some stacks, and some value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.

NHL DFS Picks

Goalie to Target

Juuse Saros, Predators ($7,900)

The Nashville Predators are in the thick of a playoff race and have a big matchup tonight in regard to said race.

Normally, it's Juuse Saros ($7,900) keeping Nashville in the playoff hunt. This season, it's kind of been the opposite. Saros has not been as good as usual, ranking 29th in goals saved above expected. In the previous two seasons, he had the second-highest total in this metric.

Saros will take on a struggling Los Angeles Kings team at home on Wednesday. The Kings have won just two of their last 16 games and are averaging the third-fewest goals per game in that stretch.

Saros had allowed three goals or fewer in six games before losing on Monday. With the way the Kings are playing, Saros can start another good streak tonight. He doesn't use up a ton of salary, either, coming in at just $7,900.

Stacks

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are fifth in goals per game this season and are a team we should consider stacking on this small slate.

The first line for Detroit has Dylan Larkin ($8,800) centering Alex DeBrincat ($7,500) and Lucas Raymond ($6,400). These three are the top scorers in both points and goals for Detroit. Larkin and Raymond play together on the first power play, as well.

Detroit will face the DeBrincat's old team, the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa allows the third-most goals per game thanks to the league's worst team save percentage.

You could also stack the second line for the Wings. That line will have J.T. Compher ($5,500) playing with Robby Fabbri ($4,700) and David Perron ($5,000). Compher and Perron link up on the top power play, so you can get exposure to that unit for a low total salary if you stack this line.

The Red Wings have the highest implied team total (3.31) on the slate. I like their chances of scoring a bunch tonight against the Senators, and it could come from either the first or second line.

Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks are not a team we've wanted to stack often this season, but Wednesday gives us the perfect opportunity to do it.

The first line has a low total salary, and we get to play an exciting rookie in Leo Carlsson ($5,200). Carlsson is second in points per game among rookies who have played at least five games, but the Ducks have managed his total games played, resulting in his overall numbers not looking as eye-popping as they should.

Joining Carlsson on the first line are Ryan Strome ($4,300) and Adam Henrique ($5,600). Henrique is having a decent season, with 15 goals and 32 points in 48 games. He's putting himself in the shop window as a potential trade deadline asset and could rack up points in matchups like this one.

The Ducks will play their in-state rivals, the San Jose Sharks. San Jose got a shutout last night, but for the season, they are giving up the most goals per game in the league. They are also dead last in expected goals allowed per 60 minutes.

There are only three teams tonight with implied team totals above three goals, and Anaheim's is one of them. With how easy it is to fit these guys into lineups, they're a great stack to zero in on.

Value Skaters

William Eklund, C, Sharks ($4,600)

The Sharks don't have many bright spots this season, but William Eklund ($4,600) is one of them. The rookie is third on the team in points and has back-to-back games with two assists.

The Sharks may be underdogs in this game, but they can score against an Anaheim team that allows the seventh-most goals per game and is without a key defenseman in Pavel Mintyukov.

Eklund is on the first power play for San Jose, so he'll have opportunities to get more assists tonight.

Tyson Barrie, D, Predators ($3,600)

A year ago, Tyson Barrie ($3,600) was quarterbacking one of the best power plays the league has ever seen.

Now, he finds it difficult to crack the lineup regularly for the Predators. It looks like he'll get some ice time tonight and will be on Nashville's first power play.

If you're like me, you're often looking for a defenseman with a low salary to make your lineups work. If you roster Barrie for just $3,600, you at least have upside for points with a defenseman who is capable offensively.
