NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Wednesday 1/10/24
NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.
Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.
Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.
Let's jump in and take a look at today's slate, find a goalie, some stacks, and some value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.
NHL DFS Picks
Goalie to Target
Carter Hart, Philadelphia Flyers ($8,100)
On a night where there are just three games to pick from, it makes this a much easier decision to roll with Carter Hart over everyone else on the slate.
Hart is in the midst of his best season since his second year in the league, showing the potential that many believed he long had. It helps that his team is playing at a higher level, as well. The Philadelphia Flyers are 20-14-6, good for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Hart has been a key part of them finding success this year.
Over 23 starts, the goaltender has put together a 2.69 goals against average and .911 save percentage. Those are some of the better marks in the NHL, and he also has been a positive in goals saved above expectation (5.85).
A big reason to go with Hart tonight is the welcoming matchup. The Flyers will face off with the Montreal Canadiens in an Eastern Conference tilt. The Habs have once again been one of the bottom-tier teams in hockey, entering tonight at 17-17-5.
They can be a tough team due to their youth, but they struggle to score, which is all we need to hear. Montreal ranks 27th with a 56.13 Corsi For per 60 minutes and 28th with 2.68 Goals For per 60 minutes. It could be a dominant night for a Flyers team that's allowing just 2.73 Goals Against per 60 minutes.
For a night with so few options, Hart feels like a layup to target. numberFire's model has him projected as the top goalie of the night, expecting him to finish with 18.8 FanDuel points.
Stacks
Dallas Stars
Let's go for the best offense with the best matchup tonight. The Dallas Stars are the team to stack on the three-game slate. Dallas has been an offensive powerhouse for much of the 2023-24 season, utilizing a roster that is filled with talent up and down the lineup.
It's led the Stars to having a 62.22 Corsi For per 60 minutes, good for 10th in the NHL. It gets even better in the goal-scoring department, where they rank fourth with 3.53 Goals For per 60 minutes. Both of these numbers should give a good idea of what the Stars can do against the Minnesota Wild.
The Wild will be starting rookie goaltender Jesper Wallstedt, who will be making his NHL debut. It's a rough game to enter into, especially when the Wild haven't been all too good defensively. While the Wild only allow a 58.96 Corsi Against per 60 minutes, they are watching the puck go into the net aplenty. Minnesota's 3.15 Goals Against per 60 minutes ranks them 20th this season. Good luck to the rookie tonight against this Stars team.
Dallas has the best implied total of the slate tonight (3.68), per numberFire's heat map.
The top line trio of Jason Robertson ($8,200), Joe Pavelski ($7,500), and Roope Hintz ($7,200) is where you get the most value from stacking this team. They should be on the attack all night whether it's even strength or on the power play.
Value Skaters
Owen Tippett, W, Philadelphia Flyers ($6,100)
When looking for values, we're trying to find players who can create opportunities for themselves and/or play a big role on their team. This season, Owen Tippett is doing both for the Flyers.
Tippett has 13 goals, 10 assists, and 23 points over his first 40 games this season. Those aren't stats that will jump off the page, but with the role he plays for this team, it's good enough to lean on him tonight as a value skater.
The best part about Tippett is that he likes to shoot -- a lot. He's averaging an impressive 3.48 shots per game after recording 139 thus far. Someone who can create that many chances, especially for this salary, cannot be overlooked in a good matchup like he has tonight against the Canadiens.
numberFire's model is projecting Tippett to finish with 12.6 FanDuel points.
Jamie Benn, W, Dallas Stars ($5,200)
Jamie Benn makes the list of value skaters today due to opportunity and role -- which are key to the Stars' success.
Dallas' captain has been on the third line all season and doesn't shoot the puck an excessive amount (65 shots), but he racks up points thanks to his role on the top power-play unit.
Paired with Wyatt Johnston and Evgeni Dadonov, the Stars have one of the best third lines in the NHL. Through 39 games, Benn has 8 goals, 18 assists, and 26 points. He's also recorded a point per game over his last two outings, so we're willing to roll with this mini-point streak in hoping he's got some more with the lack of options today.
Benn is projected to finish with 11.8 FanDuel points, per numberFire's model.
