NHL Calder Trophy Odds: Can Anyone Catch Connor Bedard?

With a quarter of the season complete, the award races are starting to heat up in the NHL.

Heading into the season, no award had a bigger favorite than the Calder Trophy. And after about two months of action, we're beginning to see why it was so one-sided to begin with.

Here's a look at the Calder Trophy odds, per FanDuel Sportsbook:

NHL Calder Trophy Odds

Connor Bedard (-270)

Well, to the surprise of no one, this Connor Bedard guy is pretty good.

He's been as advertised for the Chicago Blackhawks and the NHL over the first 20 games of his career. He's already notched 10 goals and 7 assists -- good for 17 points on the campaign. Furthermore, he's on pace for 41 goals this season, which would be an impressive feat for anyone let alone an 18-year-old phenom.

There's been a lot of good play by rookies this season, but when a 40-goal season is in play, it's difficult to see anyone else have a shot at the NHL's rookie of the year honors.

The -270 odds that Bedard has right now could only get steeper as the season moves along. He's an undeniable force in the market at this stage, and it will take some heroics from another rookie (or an injury) to try and keep up -- let alone catch him.

The Field

The 2023-24 NHL season has been filled with talented rookies and they deserve some love -- even if they're all on the outside looking in when it comes to the Calder Trophy race.

Logan Cooley (+850) has the second-best odds of any rookie. He's opened up his season with 2 goals, 11 assists, and 13 points in 21 games. The Arizona Coyotes have to like what they're seeing from him on the top line of their offense alongside Clayton Keller. If he can start potting some more goals, he could make noise in the market as the season goes along.

Luke Hughes (+1500) might be seen as the third Hughes brother right now, but he deserves respect for what he's doing. The New Jersey Devils have featured Hughes in big roles as he's averaging 19:41 time on ice thanks to playing on the top power-play unit. Through 20 games, Hughes has 2 goals, 11 assists, and 13 points.

Adam Fantilli (+3500) is a long shot with just 10 points to his name thus far. He should be able to get more going as the Columbus Blue Jackets find their game. His time on ice is still limited (15:33 TOI average), meaning that he has to make the most of his opportunities out there when he gets the chance.

Pavel Mintyukov (+3500) deserves some love for what he's done in his first season. The former 10th overall pick has shined in his first year with the Anaheim Ducks, posting 12 points while making an argument to be the best rookie blue-liner in hockey.

Everyone else is a longshot at this point, but Bedard hasn't completely pulled away from the pack yet. There's room to make up but it should be an exciting race -- at least for a little bit longer.
