NHL Betting Picks: Tuesday 10/31/23

The NHL couldn't possibly compete with Halloween, so we've only got two games to work with tonight.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Los Angeles Kings at Toronto Maple Leafs

Maple Leafs ML (-152)
Maple Leafs -1.5 (+150)

The Los Angeles Kings travel to Canada to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.

Both teams are off to solid-but-unspectacular starts to the season. Even though there have been some questions over the defense and the top line being in a slump in Toronto, they are 5-2-1.

The Kings are 4-2-2 and have played a lot of wild games so far. They are leading the league with 4.38 goals per game, but question marks remain over their goaltending. LA currently has the lowest team save percentage in the NHL.

No one would really expect the Leafs to have a significant goaltending advantage in most games this season. However, thehy have the edge in goal tonight. Joseph Woll has been excellent so far this season, saving 7.36 goals above expected.

Toronto's forwards are due for some regression. So far, Auston Matthews has an on-ice shooting percentage of 6.68% at five-on-five, down from his clip of 11.31% last season. Mitchell Marner is at 6.64% this campaign, down from 10.61% in the previous season.

On-ice shooting percentage is a metric that tends to regress over the course of the season. It's highly unlikely that these two forwards got that much worse at finishing over the course of the summer. They can definitely experience some regression against poor goaltending in this one.

According to numberFire's model, there is value on both the moneyline and the puck line for the Leafs tonight.

Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks

Over 5.5 (-134)

Editor's Note: Since publication, Nashville has announced that they're starting backup goalie Kevin Lankinen instead of Juuse Saros, which has pushed the total to 6.5 goals.

The Nashville Predators and Vancouver Canucks face each other for the second consecutive Tuesday night.

Vancouver won last week, 3-2, and played pretty well, creating 3.33 expected goals. Overall, they are fifth in goals per 60 minutes at 3.84. Canucks games averaged 6.9 goals last season, partially because of their league-worst penalty kill.

They aren't the worst this season, coming in at seventh from the bottom. The Predators have the third-worst penalty kill, even worse than what Vancouver's finished at last season. This could lead to offensive success for either team's power play. Vancouver's power play ranks seventh in the league, and Nashville's ranks 11th.

Nashville hasn't been scoring a ton, but their best offensive player is due for regression. Filip Forsberg is shooting just 2.8% this season -- well below his 12.7% career rate. If he can get going, it will do a lot for their offense.

Vancouver is a team that I'd expect to have totals at 6.0 or 6.5 in most games. Five of their eight games this year have had at least seven goals in them. We can take advantage of this low total and take the over tonight.
