NFL Preseason Week 2: One Thing to Watch in Each Game This Weekend
The NFL season is fast approaching, and many teams will use Week 2 of the preseason to get their squads into form before the regular season begins. That means viewers should get to see their favorite starters play more snaps than they did in the previous week -- which means more exciting NFL action.
The bulk of this weekend's action will take place on Saturday, but Sunday and Monday will each have one game for dedicated viewers, as well.
NFL Preseason Week 2 Betting Odds: Saturday
Jacksonville Jaguars at Detroit Lions
Trevor Lawrence Back in Action
The Jacksonville Jaguars produced the best highlight of the preseason so far in Week 1 (check out the tweet below) with Nathan Rourke's tackle-breaking touchdown pass, but we're all looking forward to seeing the Jags' first team offense this week.

Head coach Doug Pederson allowed his starters to work off some rust for a couple of drives last week and we should see a healthier dosage of Trevor Lawrence and company this week. Fantasy managers will be most keen to see Calvin Ridley get back up to speed, but we should monitor the first-team rep distribution between incumbent stud Travis Etienne and new teammate Tank Bigsby.
The Jags will square off against a Detroit Lions defense that suffered through some serious growing pains last season but could take a step forward in 2023. This could be a first-team duel with implications for the NFL playoffs later this season; FanDuel Sportsbook's division betting odds market has both teams as favorites to win their respective divisions this season.
Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans
Can C.J. Stroud Brush Off His Shaky Debut?
It didn't take long for second-overall pick C.J. Stroud to get his "welcome to the NFL moment"; the Pats actually handed him a few of them in their meeting last week. The Houston Texans were unable to keep Stroud on his feet amidst the Pats' ferocious pass rush, leading the team to cut Stroud's debut short.
Stroud saw pressure on a ridiculous five of his seven drop backs in Week 1. The pressure seemed to get to him on his interception, as well. While he had more time than usual in the pocket for that pass, defensive back Jalen Mills was able to comfortably read Stroud's eyes for the easy INT.
Fortunately for Stroud, he'll get to face off against a Dolphins squad this week that was reluctant to put any of its starters (or important second-stringers) on the field last week. The Dolphins could take the Rams-esque approach to the preseason and shelve their starters til Week 1, meaning Stroud's Preseason Week 2 matchup could be a bit easier than last week's.
Buffalo Bills at Pittsburgh Steelers
Is Kenny Pickett Brewing a Breakout?
Second-year Pittsburgh Steelers starter Kenny Pickett didn't waste any time putting points on the board this preseason. He led his team on an efficient first-quarter march down the field, capping it off with a splashy touchdown to fellow 2022 NFL Draft classmate George Pickens.
It was an encouraging sign to see Pickett casually sling a touchdown on his first drive of the season -- especially after he threw for just 7 touchdowns over 12 starts last season. We don't want to read too much into one drive of preseason play, but it's still better to see breakout candidates play well than it is to see them struggle.
He'll have a chance to build on that strong first showing in his Week 2 battle with the Buffalo Bills, who have their sights set on a Super Bowl this season. The betting markets like their odds, too; the Bills have +1000 Super Bowl odds in August, the third-best odds across the entire NFL.
Chicago Bears at Indianapolis Colts
The Dawn of the Anthony Richardson Era
It didn't take long for the Indianapolis Colts to dub 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson their Week 1 starter. The athletically gifted quarterback looked physically ready in his first taste of preseason action last week, and now he'll get a chance to iron out some kinks before the NFL season begins in earnest.
A preseason matchup against a Chicago Bears defense that allowed a league-most 463 points to opposing teams last season should make for a nice proving ground for the raw passer. His first outing didn't look especially exciting on the stat sheet, completing 7 of 12 attempts for 67 yards and an interception, but he did seem to settle in after his first drive ended in a pick.
Don't forget about Justin Fields on the other side of the field, either. This game could feature two of the leagues most athletic quarterbacks and should be one of the most exciting preseason games to watch this summer.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New York Jets
Is Trey Palmer for Real?
There are other storylines to watch when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the New York Jets this weekend -- like who the Bucs' starting quarterback will be come Week 1 -- but the preseason is also a great opportunity to watch under-the-radar players earn their stripes, and Bucs rookie wideout Trey Palmer looked pretty legit in his first taste of NFL action.
Palmer was the highlight of the Bucs' loss to the Steelers last week. He ran with the "first" team (with starters Chris Godwin, Mike Evans and Russell Gage resting), catching the nice touchdown linked below in the corner of the end zone. He finished his day with a solid 4 catches for 33 yards and a score.
Palmer has reportedly been building on that solid preseason performance, too -- even beating the Jets' reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner on a long ball in joint practices earlier this week. Palmer was relatively unheralded as a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft but could stake a claim on a starting job with another strong performance here -- especially after Gage suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Tennessee Titans at Minnesota Vikings
Is Malik Willis the New QB2 in Tennessee?
Things did not go according to plan for Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis in his rookie season. Willis looked completely overmatched when called upon last year, leading the Titans to bring in Joshua Dobbs as a free agent mid-season to fill in for an injured Ryan Tannehill. It looked like he was already on his way out of the door with the Titans after they drafted rookie Will Levis in the second round this year.
Clearly, though, Willis took a huge step forward as a passer this offseason. He started over Levis in their first preseason game, leading the Titans on a scoring drive from the rip. It looked like the game had slowed down for him, which means he could be worth keeping an eye on in fantasy leagues this season -- especially considering his gifts as a rusher on top of his passing ability.
We'll be watching to see how he fares on Saturday against a Minnesota Vikings defense that could be in for a tough season.
Kansas City Chiefs at Arizona Cardinals
Will the Chiefs Have a Fantasy-Relevant Receiver?
We all know the Kansas City Chiefs' offense moves through Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. We would all love to find out whether there are other Chiefs we can trust in fantasy football this year.
The Chiefs' first preseason game didn't reveal too much, but we did see some potential sleepers show up. Former Clemson standout Justyn Ross nabbed a touchdown -- as did free agent signing Richie James. Skyy Moore was uninvolved, but rookie Rashee Rice was able to catch some passes in his absence.
The Chiefs will be one of the highest-scoring offenses in the league this year, so grabbing exposure to some of their key players in the later rounds of fantasy drafts could be a winning strategy. The tricky part is determining who -- if anyone -- has that kind of potential upside this season.
New England Patriots at Green Bay Packers
Jordan Love Looks a Little Legit
There was a mix of good and bad in Jordan Love's preseason debut last week as the Green Bay Packers took down the Bengals, but overall, he seemed to show enough for fans to be cautiously optimistic for the upcoming season.
That said, he'll get a much tougher matchup this weekend against a New England Patriots team more inclined to get their starting defense some reps. Their defense ate the Texans' offensive line alive last weekend, so it will be fascinating to watch how Love handles the pressure this week.
A good performance from him here could keep fantasy favorites like Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, and A.J. Dillon in fantasy lineups all season long.
Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers
The Bounce-Back Broncos
New Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton kept his word during the first game of the preseason, and the Russell Wilson-led first team saw plenty of action against the Cardinals last week. Fortunately, it looked like Payton was helping to get their once-disastrous offense back on the right path.
That said, a preseason loss to the Cardinals -- who are tied with the Texans for the worst Super Bowl odds (+18000) in the league -- is hardly going to be predictive of the team's regular-season performance. Viewers will get to see them try their hand against a much more formidable foe in the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.
Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Rams
Let's See Some More Stetson Bennett
The Los Angeles Rams have been known to rest their starters during the preseason, and Week 1 of the 2023 preseason was no different. We didn't get to see any reps from guys like Cooper Kupp or Matthew Stafford, but we did get to see plenty of action from fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett. Honestly, we kind of liked what we saw.
Bennett should get plenty more reps this week as the Rams welcome the Las Vegas Raiders back to Southern California. In his first NFL game, Bennett completed 17 of 29 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown and looked like a player fantasy managers could turn to in a pinch in Sean McVay's quarterback-friendly offensive scheme.
He seemed to show some chemistry already with fellow rookie Puka Nacua and former Bucs wideout Tyler Johnson, too, which could make for some fun viewing on Saturday.
Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks
Is Deuce Vaughn the Cowboys' RB2?
There were reasonable concerns about new Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn's size during the predraft process. Vaughn's collegiate production was undeniable; in his final season, he totaled 1936 yards and 12 touchdowns on 335 touches as a rushing and receiving threat, but we just don't see many (or any) 5'5", 180-lbs players succeed in the league.
That said, Vaughn certainly looked like he was ready for the NFL in the Cowboys' first preseason game and could work his way into the team's RB2 role behind Tony Pollard with another strong performance on Saturday. He rushed 8 times for 50 yards and a touchdown against the Jags last week and will look to build on that efficient outing against the Seattle Seahawks.
NFL Preseason Week 2 Betting Odds -- Sunday and Monday
Teams | Spread | Total | Time (ET) |
---|---|---|---|
Saints at Chargers | NO -3.5 (-105) | 37.5 | 7:05 (SUN) |
Ravens at Commanders | BAL -3 (-110) | 38.5 | 8:00 (MON) |
New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Chargers
Are We Paying Enough Attention to A.T. Perry?
The New Orleans Saints let veteran quarterback and 2019 NFL passing yards leader Jameis Winston have some fun in Week 1 of the preseason, and in the process, he helped 2023 sixth-round pick A.T. Perry steal the show. Perry lit up the Chiefs last week, catching a game-high 6 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown along the way.
Perry was a standout performer at Wake Forest, racking up a whopping 152 catches for 2,389 yards and 26 touchdowns in his final two seasons of college ball. With production like that it was a little surprising he fell to the sixth round this year, but now, it looks like the Saints might have a hidden gem on their hands.
The Saints are set to field a duo of Chris Olave and Michael Thomas on game days this year, but Perry could earn a spot just behind them on the depth chart with another strong performance against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Baltimore Ravens at Washington Commanders
Can Sam Howell End the Ravens' Preseason Win Streak?
Washington Commanders starter Sam Howell had a nice preseason debut in the team's win over the Browns last week. He completed 9 of his 12 attempts for 77 yards and a score, adding 8 more yards on the ground on a scramble. If he can keep that up during the regular season, the Commanders might have their first legitimate, multi-season starter since Kirk Cousins.
But first, Howell and the Commanders will have to take on the Baltimore Ravens, who extended their NFL record preseason win streak to 24 consecutive games when they just barely eked out a win against the Eagles last weekend.
The Commanders should be trying to get as many reps as possible for Howell before Week 1, meaning the Ravens could be looking at some tough competition as they seek to extend their winning streak. This showdown will get a spotlight showing on Monday evening.
