NFL MVP Odds Update: Jalen Hurts Is Soaring

In a way, Week 8 treated the NFL MVP odds at FanDuel Sportsbook like a slip'n'slide, especially pertaining to some of the most significant names in the game.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still leading the way, but his odds lengthened (from +240 to +270) after losing to the Denver Broncos last Sunday. Crazily enough, that was the first time in seven seasons that Mahomes was defeated by his AFC West rival from the Mile High.

Out in Landover, Maryland, Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller Jalen Hurts tossed four touchdowns last weekend. He and the Birds earned the win, moving to 7-1, further cementing the NFL's best record at the moment.

For the San Francisco 49ers, it was another frustrating afternoon on both sides of the ball. Brock Purdy committed three turnovers while the opposing quarterback, Joe Burrow, completed as many of 19 straight passing attempts at one point, resulting in a loss for San Francisco. Naturally, the respective QBs moved in opposite directions on the MVP odds board.

Ahead of NFL Week 9, let's dig into the latest MVP lines.

Notable Jumps

Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +350

As alluded to in the intro, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are buzzing right now. Despite a slow start at the rival Washington Commanders last Sunday, Philly managed to turn on the juice for 28 points in the second half in a road win. To up the ante, Hurts did well to throw touchdowns to each of A.J. Brown (who caught two), DeVonta Smith and Julio Jones.

With the 49ers losing for the third straight week, the Birds stand in a solid position to earn the NFC's No. 1 seed for a second year in a row. That alone will cast a positive light upon Hurts to win his first AP NFL MVP award. Keep in mind: Hurts was last season's runner-up in this market.

Looking forward, Philadelphia is about to embark on a grueling stretch. In order, they have the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Cowboys again, and Seattle Seahawks. Frankly, it will be quite interesting to see where all the pieces land after that gamut of games.

Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +1800

Quietly, Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars have won their last five contests. At 6-2 overall, they lead the AFC South by a wide margin. As for Lawrence, he is showing a career-best completion clip of 68.3% with a 9-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Likely en route to his second straight division title, T-Law could be a sneaky-good play to win his first league MVP. As showcased by his sharpened accuracy, his game instincts have noticeably improved. With a better feel, he is using his legs to produce a personal-best mark of 5.1 yards per rush.

Often, and sometimes unfairly, what is most important for quarterbacks is winning. The Jags are doing exactly that right now. Over their current five-game heater, Jacksonville is scoring 27.2 PPG. Worth mentioning: they enter their bye in Week 9. The way Lawrence performs out of the break against struggling San Francisco will give a strong indication of which direction his MVP odds will trend for the remainder of 2023.

Steep Drop

Brock Purdy, QB, San Francisco 49ers

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +3000

Notably, Brock Purdy and the 49ers are in a rut. After snapping off five relatively dominant wins to commence the year, San Francisco has since lost their past three games. Late turnovers have absolutely been an issue, as Purdy has committed four second-half interceptions in the last two weeks.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Purdy was as short as 14-to-1 odds in this market before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals at home last Sunday. Wildly, that was the first time "Mr. Irrelevant 2022" had lost a game at Levi's Stadium. Of course, all streaks come to an end.

Still, Purdy is not putting up bad numbers despite falling short on the scoreboard. He is top 10 in passing yardage, and his 9.1 yards per attempt is the highest mark among starting signal-callers. Like Lawrence, Purdy is also on bye this week. Immediately following, the two young quarterbacks will meet in Duval County.

Holding Tight

Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions

FanDuel Sportsbook Odds: +4000

After a 5-1 start to the season (that included a win over the reigning champion Chiefs), the Detroit Lions came crashing back to Earth in Week 7. Specifically, they landed in north-central Maryland where the Baltimore Ravens dismantled their offensive attack. Transparently, it was one of Jared Goff's worst games as a Lion to date, averaging an atrocious 5.4 yards per attempt.

After the beatdown from the Ravens, Goff's MVP odds grew from +3300 to +4000. They stayed at +4000 even after Goff carved up the Las Vegas Raiders on MNF to the tune of 272 yards and a score in a convincing Detroit win.

The Lions appear to be cruising to an NFC North title -- up two games -- and they're just a game back of Philly for the NFC's top seed. If the Lions keep winning and Goff continues to play well, his MVP odds will likely shorten.
